So this is basically the right of two evils. Privacy information not fully protected or downright controlling the freedom to do something.

Well, the fact that they banned Blackberries and not other smartphones does seem to suggest that the UAE knows a thing or two about iPhone traffic that they dont know about Blackberry traffic.
I'm no security expert, but the security on Blackberry e-mails is notoriously tight, at least with the right corporate infrastructure in place. I've seen more knowlegeable people than me complain that other smartphones aren't secure enough for enterprise use. Hence the Blackberry's strong presence in the enterprise market.
