Forums - Microsoft - IGN: Kinect seems like the lame donkey in the race.

You can read the full article by clicking the link at the bottom of the thread, but here are the pieces that stick out the most.

Highlighted is the fact that Kinect struggles in darkened conditions, which goes against the claims MS made, the appearance of lag, games involving you just waving your arms and voice controls working sporadically.

This isn't meant to be an article to bash or anything, just giving you guys the latest word from one of the biggest gaming sites on the net. So if you don't like it please take it up with IGN.

"Nintendo is still ahead of the game when it comes to motion sensing, and both Sony and Microsoft still have a long way to go to catch up, but so far Kinect seems like the lame donkey in the race."

"As it stands, PlayStation's Move looks a much more accessible piece of hardware and the tech demos we've seen blew Kinect's flailing displays out of the water."

"Our final demo was with Kinectimals, which was shown to us in a curtained off area of the showfloor, seemingly to enable voice commands to be heard by Kinect. The system really struggled in the darkened area, with the sounds of Lady Gaga still heard through the thick curtains, and the on-screen lion cub responded to the demonstrator's commands only sporadically. "

"Most of the time trying the ball-dodging mini-game in Adventures was spent flailing around at random. Whether this was caused by the infamous 'lag' that seemed to plague early demos was difficult to tell, but when you have to resort to waving your arms like a semaphore enthusiast at a rave whilst you're trying to do something as simple as bat a ball back at the screen it can get frustrating. "

"Joy Ride, a cartoony kart-racer - was surprisingly difficult to control, and most of the seasoned gaming journos spent half the time spinning off the track. Waving your limbs around in front of a screen, regardless of how simplified the game is, isn't an intuitive control system. "

Ouch .. not a nice review

It seems to be having many issues similar to that of the EyeToy.

Sorry for the double post, but these are two other quotes that also really put the ouch on Kinect.

"It seems silence and solitude are needed by Kinect for optimum performance - conditions seldom found in homes with young children – Kinectimal's target audience. "

"Until Microsoft begins to utilise some of Kinect's more exciting features in a – dare we say it – cooler way, then it may struggle to convince even its most fervent fans to part with £130 when it finally becomes available later this year. "

Yep, it truly dropped off my rader completely since e3, to me. I seen enough negative press about it for awhile, and add that with the price of the device.

I will say Move has sparked my interest, namely with a certain level 5 game coming out for it, if the manage to lower the price one day, I will pick it up.

So how much time does MS have to iron out the problems before they have to start production? A couple months? Can they delay, or is it too late to backtrack on their word now?

Kinect will still sell more than Move because MS will advertise their products. Sony hasnt been able to show how unique or fun this thing i beside tech demo that won't be available anytime soon. I am simply tired of the beta products Sony.

It looks like Kinect has passed the IGN test. If they hate on it then obviously its going to do well, cue Wii console and Wii games.

From September 2006, just a few months prior to the Wii's launch:

Of course, all things considered, the fact that Wii plays GCN games is probably one of the least compelling reasons to pick up the new console -- at least compared to its other selling points. Not only is it sleeker, smaller and more powerful than its predecessor, but it has a launch library that immediately surpasses some second and even third generation outtings on other systems. Wii will launch with what could be the best videogame of all time in The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and with other potential hits like Metroid, Rayman, Madden, Far Cry, Red Steel and Excite Truck rounding out the list, there are a lot of games to be jazzed about.

Nintendo says playing is believing. We've played Wii's lineup and we are believers. Keep on reading to discover which Wii games will be available for your holiday wish list. We think you'll be surprised by just how many titles are on the way for the system's launch.

Despite the fact that Nintendo went out of its way to showcase Wii Sports at E3 2006, there are still a lot of question marks surrounding this simplified, but inspired sports compilation disc. The set features at least three popular sports, including baseball, tennis and golf, all of which were demonstrated in playable form last May. The controls - like the graphics - are simplified to the extreme. For example, in Tennis, players don't actually move the characters on-screen, but rather swing their rackets. Nintendo has chosen to keep the games very basic in order to make them very accessible for any type of player. As part of the hardcore, we'd love nothing more than to mock this approach, but truth be told, Wii Sports is a lot of fun.

I can find numerous quotes like this surrounding the Wii's launch.  The Wii only garnered significant "hatred" twice in its life:  First when the Wii was revealed in 2005, when the controller's remote-like design was met with considerable skepticisim, and again in 2008, when hardcore gamers feared Nintendo would only be making games like Wii Fit and Wii music for the rest of the generation.  The former fears were abated mid-2006, when Nintendo proved that the Wii actually works, and works quite well.  The latter issues were mostly resolved this past E3, when Nintendo unveiled Kirby, Donkey Kong, Zelda, and numerous other games.  There are still some bitter fanboys out there that are butthurt over the Wii's amazing success, but most people are back on board thanks to the return of Nintendo's best IPs plus the upcoming 3DS.

The Wii's announcement and launch is quite the reverse of Kinect, which was met with great interest thanks to the promises made at E309, followed by a great deal of backlash after it failed to live up to many people's expectations.  Wii articles circa 2005 were far more negative than Natal articles from last year, while Wii articles from just prior to launch were incredibly positive compared to the Kinect articles of today.

The idea that everyone hated the Wii and wanted it to fail around launch is a myth that really needs to die.  Launch was the first time people were truly excited about the system, thanks to impressive E306 demos, the Super Mario Galaxy reveal, and Twilight Princess becoming a launch title.  There was much skepticism before this, and much hatred after this, but late 2006 was one of the few times Nintendo was getting a great deal positive press this generation.
