The gap is less than 4m in the real world.

I can agree PS3 numbers looked better the last 7 months thanks to their lower price and slimline PS3..

but it now appears MS will enjoy the same benefit with their Slimmer XB360 ( with slightly improved hardware)  and lower cost entry level XB360 model.  I think the sales of this slim XB360 will push Microsoft's lead back to 5 or 6 million units within 6 to 7 months thanks to the slim model and the launch of games like Halo Reach ( still 8 weeks to release and already 115,000   Preorders)..

I loved the PS2, and Sony fans have long said that PS3 would last longer this generation then the 'other' consoles .. but I think they are wrong.  The are basing most of this on how long the PS2 lasted.. which makes it flawed.  The PS2 lasted longer because the PS3 was a failure in the biggest way - it wasn't the #1 seller anymore.. so Sony lowered the PS2 to just over 100 dollars  which made it possible for people who could never afford any console go and buy one.  This was a extraordinary circumstance.  A console (PS2) certainly past its prime, with a huge library ( THE BEST Library with the most developer support ) now within the hands of people who before couldnt afford one.  The PS3 doesnt have the most developer support anymore, nor the most exclusive and because of this their game selection is hardly difference then the XB360's in most major titles.  I expect all consoles will last longer this generation, not just any one of them.  In fact when ONE of the players releases their new console you can bet this time the others will release theirs a bit closer !  Just remember, Sony had planned on releasing the PS3 within months of the XB360 but was delayed nearly a year.  If Sony had released itwithout bluray and sooner.. they would've been on the gamers side.. but instead they got selfish and decided to use it to push Bluray.  Now people are buying 120 dollar bluray players instead of the PS3.   

What's the big deal? If this is going by shipped numbers than this is accurate as far as Sony and Microsoft are concerned.

I agree, and i just posted this above.. Sony enjoyed a surge in sales most of the last year thx to their slimline unit and lower price..

now that MS has done the same it really appears XB 360 will again increase the lead they have over PS3 that Sony was able to slightly decrease over the last 7 months..

Sony really is the biggest loser, not because of their 3rd place in consoles, but because of their loss of developers.. the PS3 in no way shape or form enjoys any edge that the PS2 had... back then Sony had all the developers in their hip pocket and now Nintendo took a few back and many that were soley with Sony also worked for Microsoft.    Lastly, it can't be argued that XB Live is by far superior then the others' versions it competes with.  It's more practical, more useful, more powerful and has more to offer.   I've only heard fanboys mostly of other consoles complain that it cost money for XB LIve.   Well,XB Live is Free, yes Free.  Its cost 4.99 for Gold to play online games because they share this money with game makers so they can maintain servers to a higher quality.  Its not perfect, but for 4.99 a month if you can't afford that then you shouldn't be gaming.  Most people spend more on soda pop, beer or cigarettes in a single week.  4.99 to cover my addiction ? Sounds like a deal.. the guy you read about strung out on 'Crack' spent a whole lot more.. 

Well the problem is when you beleive any company that claims they ship more then what is being reported as sold their best interest is to their stockholders.  This is a common trick in countries outside the United States that have looser standards in reporting actual numbers without any real harsh consequences.  In a few years I think the European union will come out with some better guidelines.  Also I think the surge in PS3 sales the last year d/t their slimline PS3 will be deleted by the surge in XB360 slim sales happening now and during the next 6 months.. Anyone hoping the PS3 will come to 2nd place really don't get it.  XB Live has grown from the early days of a poultry 2 million to a currently 23 million strong and still growing.  Thats alot of Revenue their alone ! 

Microsoft in only their second console has done the unthinkable .. they beat ( or at least tied) the console maker who was previosuly number one.  And they undeniably came in #1 in online console gaming player numbers and dollar revenue. 

Yeah, but he didn't get the shipped numbers right, did he? He said like half a million less than Microsoft JUST ANNOUNCED?

Is that what the complaints are about? Well, fine then. Misquoting public numbers is stupid as he's just gonna get discredited.

One more thought, it doesn't matter right now if its a 5 million or 2 million console lead in my opinion.  Sony has went downhill alot.  I loved the PS2, we all did, but at some point some of us grow up.  I buy what is good, if someone has a better console next time I'll buy it.  Where Microsoft got smart is what they are doing with Xbox Live.  they are making it a real asset in day to day life.. putting netflix on it a year before PS3, putting facebook and twitter on it.. and now ESPN.. they have the most members at 23 million.. thats revenue Sony or Nintendo can't talk about.

Where will bluray gaming be when gaming goes to the same as digital downloaded music... the internet is getting faster and will be.. soon games will all be bought and downloaded with nothing to lose or get stolen..

It's the Shipped vs Sold thing again. If shipped always meant sold Sony would have sold a lot more PSPs and MS a crapload more 360s.

shipped is sold, when best buy places an order for 30 wiis they are paying nintendo and that is a sale, nintendo could care less about the systems after best buy pays them.
