Not possible, since recent Wii disc drives can only read discs with a burst cutting area. This excludes writeable discs, and most DVDs.

How does my homebrew manages to read it then?

It's about software instead of hardware, so yes, read DVDs isn't out of reach.

It depends on the particular revision of the drivechip; you may have an older one. This really isn't something you can circumvent with a softmod.

EDIT: I've already been told off for linking naughty things, so just look up "D3-2 chipset".

Microsoft added the Wifi and changed the shape of its console and it is selling extremely well even without a price cut.

Sony cut the price but sold a console smaller, without backwards compatibility and with bigger HDD and it sold a lot, like never before.

Nintendo could do the same: make a Wii with a different shape (not only smaller), in different colours, add an HDD or a bigger flash memory, install a channel to read DVDs and bundle it with a pair of games (Wii Party and DK) for 179$. Do you think it would have a smaller Christmas than last year? No, that would push the Wii to its limits.

OT: I think Nintendo could do a lot through advertising the value of their existing package, while promoting the variety of existing and upcoming titles.

And isn't possible to them to change their drives? They're the ones who wanted the D3-2 to fight piracy, they can use other drives if they want, can't they?

I was not talking about HD, but that would be a great addition too, even if the games are not made for HD, still would be nice for those who have an HD TV.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Since there are now many Wiis that won't read DVDs at all (pretty much every black Wii and white models since august 2009), this fragments the potential audience for a DVD player channel. Also, I doubt Nintendo would take the risk of re-enabling something which they removed in order to limit piracy / violation of DVD Forum licencing.

No wait I think you misunderstood me. I was speaking of an upgrade of the current model, which would have the exclusive on this DVD channel. Probably if they just make the channel it wouldn't push the sales, but adding it to a new model of the Wii could work well, people loves upgrades and selling it at 179$ would still give a lot of profits to Nintendo.

Adding a webcam and make a videochat, like for the 3DS, could work very well too IMHO.

I think Nintendo has finally  smartened up as far as software is concerned.

New versions of old side-scrolling classics like DKC and Kirby will boost sales.

Why nintendo ignored what the fans  wanted is mind boggling to me.  NSMB wii boosted sales for the wii last holiday season as those aforementioned titles will do the same

Now if they would only give us a real Metriod title instead of the emo version coming out this summer then sales would go thru the roof
