It's about software instead of hardware, so yes, read DVDs isn't out of reach.

It depends on the particular revision of the drivechip; you may have an older one. This really isn't something you can circumvent with a softmod.

mmm well I doubt it. I bought my Wii july 09'. But who knows, maybe I'm just lucky.
