True that, however even if Metroid Other M didn't have a deeper story, I doubt it will somehow make a huge difference in it's sales numbers. That's mostly because of the gameplay, which is basically about exploration and environmental puzzle solving. Whereas all the entries on the list are accessible, "pick up and play" material (Well, except Pokemon), which are much more easier for more casual people to get into .

Other M should be able to sell about 2.8m lifetime, like Metroid (NES) and Metroid Prime did. If it does not, there must be a fault in the design compared to those two games. Assuming it is a well-made game and highly reviewed, it would be the things that make this Metroid different from the others that caused it.

Super Metroid only sold 1.4m. In that case I think it was due to the cinematic focus (for that time, SM fitted that category). However I actually liked that game, because after a bit the story got out of the way. Only the beginning and end have problems there.

I highly doubt it was the supposed cinematic focus, since for example Ninja Gaiden on the NES was more gratuitously cinematic, but it's one of the more popular NES titles out there (and let's not even begin with Metal Gear Solid...).

I think it has more to do with how Metroid wasn't as popular and well-known as it is nowadays.

I just said the NES Metroid sold 2.8m. Metroid II sold well as well.

Ooo! I can't wait to find out more. Hopefully the rest of the game will be executed as well as this scene!

They certainly are quite high on the list. Though, Metroid Fusion and Prime 3: Corruption are also among the top 5, second only to Metroid NEs and Metroid II, and those two are even more cinematic than Super Metroid is, yet they are still higher on the list.

So the real reason why Super Metroid sold as much as it did? Shrouded in mystery.

Maybe some of the audience that bought the first two games shifted over to the Genesis instead of the SNES.
