That's mostly because of the gameplay, which is basically about exploration and environmental puzzle solving. Whereas all the entries on the list are accessible, "pick up and play" material (Well, except Pokemon), which are much more easier for more casual people to get into .

Other M should be able to sell about 2.8m lifetime, like Metroid (NES) and Metroid Prime did. If it does not, there must be a fault in the design compared to those two games. Assuming it is a well-made game and highly reviewed, it would be the things that make this Metroid different from the others that caused it.

Super Metroid only sold 1.4m. In that case I think it was due to the cinematic focus (for that time, SM fitted that category). However I actually liked that game, because after a bit the story got out of the way. Only the beginning and end have problems there.
