I think it has more to do with how Metroid wasn't as popular and well-known as it is nowadays.

I just said the NES Metroid sold 2.8m. Metroid II sold well as well.

They certainly are quite high on the list. Though, Metroid Fusion and Prime 3: Corruption are also among the top 5, second only to Metroid NEs and Metroid II, and those two are even more cinematic than Super Metroid is, yet they are still higher on the list.

So the real reason why Super Metroid sold as much as it did? Shrouded in mystery.
