Forums - Gaming - "PC Gaming Puts Other Platforms to Shame in GAMES, RESPECT, and DEALS"

Your views really are dated when you think that you need a $1500 PC to play games. Nowadays you can get a GOOD Gaming PC for only $400.

95% of PCs being sold are now under $1000, with most of them also under $750.

Today, $1000 will net you an EXCELLENT GAMING PC!!

My 2003 PC was almost able to play Starcraft 2, 2010's Biggest Game.

You should get yourself updated.

Where is this notion coming from that you can build a "good" gaming PC for 400?

Something like Radeon 5570 and 2 GB of value ram is considered a good PC now?

Sure it does the job on medium/high setting with no AA at 720p on most games (good luck with Crysis though) but I wouldn't call it "good".

Also, considering that you have 400 and don't have money to buy a monitor and have to game on your 42 inch plasma in the livingroom...no AA and 720p will be pretty annoying.

The truth is, you really need 700 bucks to get a comfortable gaming PC set up.

No it just means you don't know enough about cars and PCs to prevent such problems which is fine. Blaming them for your ignorance though, that's idiotic.

But the point that the PC is more complicated because these issues exist still stands.  The fact that you have to know how not to get virusses is an annoyance that some of us don't want to deal with, and therefore consoles are more plug and play friendly.  If you have to read a "PCs for Dummies" book to not run into these issues then it's already more work than a console.

Right, except that you can't say "the PC gets viruses" it should be more along the lines of "I don't know what I am doing to protect my PC." How often do you see a line along the lines of the former, and how many times have you seen something along the latter? That's my main problem, people assume that it's their PC that is the problem when it is their own fault. They try to pass off their ignorance on the PC instead of saying "I don't use a PC because I don't have the ability to" they jsut say "the PC is not good enough."

You are right it does take a little mroe time to get used to the PC, but as with everything, the things that are best take a while to learn. You don't learn to be an F1 driver just by getting in an automatic SUV and driving. Sure that is enough to get you from point A to point B, but it is nowhere near as amazing a driving experience as a manual sports car. If driving is the goal that is.

I have no interest in what any of that offers me.

PC gaming doesnt offer me the most important aspect to me. Ease of use and jump in and play. And as long as Halo is not on PC at launch then I'll never consider it.

I'm glad you like PC gaming. I dont.

Actually, it does offer that... ever heard of Steam?

Yesterday I opened Steam for the first time in about a month as I wasnted to screenshot Portal for VGC Most Wanted. I had to wait 10 minutes for Steam to update, then a further 10 minutes for Portal to update. Had I not been online it might have done it without needing to update, but who is likely to be offline nowadays unless there was a power cut or something.

Now this does highlight an advantage of PC gaming in that I was able to get my own screenshot easily without extra kit, however it took long enough, print screen it seems just records black if you use it for a full screen application, and exiting it crashed the game (running it with Photoshop open at the same time meant an atrocious framerate while playing too) I managed to get it though by restarting and playing the game in a window. Including the playing time to get to the bit I wanted (boss fight with GlaDOS) it took me almost 50 minutes to get a screenshot.

I've been offline for an entire week now, and playing King's Bounty.

Anyway, the problems you had with crashing happens when you're using a resource-heavy program like Photoshop while playing a PC game, especially if you PC isn't good. Why didn't you just use Paint?

I've been playing King's Bounty and had Firefox opened all week, and King's Bounty never crashed on me. The problem you had was because your PC wasn't powerful enough.

As for the updates, they're amazing. Steam keeps improving with those updates, and games too. Why wouldn't you want updates? Especially since it only took you 20 minutes to download a month's worth of updates :

that happens with 360 and PS3 though, don't turn it on for months, and you turn it on, updates updates updates, that's the norm these days, I think the problem is with your hardware if you are crashing so I'd ask what video card you have, which driver version and what CPU you have, and I'd be happy to help. There shouldn't be any reason that it should take 50 minutes to get a screenshot when I can boot up my PC and starting streaming live in HD in under 5 minutes. feel free to send me a PM about PC issues, anybody really, I'd be happy to help for free since I'm nice, if I get to it anyways =P.

Well the fact that there are people who can't drive either doesn't free them of their reposnability of driving. If you get in a wreck you caused it's because you had a lapse in judgement or didn't know how to drive. It's the exact same principle with the PC and viruses. It just means you do not know how to use a PC well and that's that. You can't blame the PC for something you have done.I have been playing WoW since 2004 all the time and I have still yet to see a virus. Which proves my point exactly, it's your fault that you got your viruses not your PC's. Otherwise I would have seen all these viruses you seem to have been getting.

As for your car running strangely without any given reason, there probably is a reason and it is probably your fault too, you just didn't know it is. If you force it too much, drive it over holes without being careful, yeah it may have strange things which you think you didn't cause, but it's still your fault. Unless it was a manufacturing problem it is highly likely that you shouldn't be blaming your car, but yourself.

So the fact that I haven't studied up enough on PC's or cars to not run into these issues makes me an idiot?  Well I'll just go back to my simple console that luckily I can understand, hopefully someone will help me tie my shoes tomorrow morning so I don't trip over the shoe laces all day again.

it's already getting better as more and more netbooks are coming in with more power(espeically AMD ones with APUs next year) so all you'd need is a.) internet b.) Steam, and it becomes not only a viable desktop platform(docking station or XGP port,) but also a portable gaming/general computing device which is a lot more than what consoles can offer. Desktop PCs will remain power user friendly while small laptops or netbooks will be the new fav for people not as oriented in computing, it'sa coming! btw, use Avast anti-virus, perfectly free and works great.

Now i'm not going to say PC gaming is terrible, but perhaps you can understand why it is a hassle to people and that there are actually some advantages to console gaming. My personal gripes with PC gaming are numerous.

Funny you should bring this up. If you tried to do the same on the PS3 and hadn't updated it for a while you'd have to wait for the firmware to download and update, then the game to download and update, only then you'd be able to start doing whatever you wanted to get a screenshot of.

Nothing in your post is exclusive to the PC, I can come in with the exact same story on a 360 or a PS3.

I also want to make another point. It does take a little while to learn how to use a PC well, but it is not that long. It's not weeks and weeks, you can learn how to do it in a day or three depending on how fast you absorb info. As I said also, from nothing to ordering, building, and setting up, I spent about a total of 6-7 hours and my current PC is the software/hardware equivalent of a swiss watch. I have 0 problems running games, even the old ones like Deus Ez and XCOM and that is not the only benefit. I have no problems browsing, programming, designing, watching movies, listening to muic, streaming media, etc. etc. With just that day or so of knowledge my life is infinitely better because everything I do just works without a problem.

Sure consoles don't require that day or so of learning, but they also can't do an eighth of what my PC can do, and half of what the consoles can do they do it worse than the PC. Because I mean really, if you want to play a paltformer type of games that the PCs suck at playing, just plug in a gamepad and you are good to go in that respect as well.

Maybe he likes following the Wii sales and just happens to see a lot of ignorance about PC gaming. I know that's how I ended up here.
