Zune probably does pretty well considering it's the movie service for the Xbox and the music service is pretty good... I have Zune Pass myself and it would be a pain to give it up

My point was that MS should continue to invest in these smaller division for the long term, regardless of its profitability relative to its most profitable division.

I said in a short period of time, the Xbox 360 will be a profitable business overall and I stick with that.

700 million profit with Zune, Windows Mobile losses and Windows Mobile 7 R&D and Kin is pretty good. The Xbox 360 clearly made one billion USD profit this fiscal year. They will top that next year.

For the division since 2000... that will take some time :D or some generations. But you have to see it in from a wider perspective. Look what has been built since then. Xbox , Xbox Live and soon Kinect will be pretty big brands. You can't just ignore this IMO.

Overall, Since the xbox 360's inception the X360 has lost $3.17 billion including the $1 billion payout set aside for RROD, so don't bring that BS.

The 360 has profited $1.35 billion fiscal year ending 2008, with the bulk of that profit coming from the fiscal year just ending.

Officially from the EDD since the x360 the division has lost $1.82 billion.

However, without Kin last Q, it's likely, nay, a dead cert the EDD would have profited in the $100 - $300 million range, they've said themselves in the report, 360 profits are up.

I estimate total losses since X360 to be around $1 billion ish, so going forward I expect them to make that up in the next 2 - 4 Q's. Not dropping the price of 360's, giving Kinect a higher than we should expect price and not taking a bigger chunk off their games like Sony have, mean they'll profit VERY well across the board over the next 2 Q's.

I still don't understand why MS went through with the Kin in the first place - it not only cost them a lot of money but the sales were a epic dissapointment, they pulled the plug in what, two to three weeks after it launched?

Overall it looks like MS knows what they are doing with the XBox brand - and if Kinect is a major success the profits are going to rise pretty quickly. MS has come a long way since the original XBox and would be profitable overall right now if it weren't for RROD costs(and known as the Red Dot of Death on the new 360) - which have been drastically reduced since the Jasper and Falcons were introduced, and *hopefully* will be 5% or less with the new 360 revision.

I assume it was something to do with the Danger aquisition.  They felt they needed to go through with it.  I think when it gets down to it this major flub was the reason some heads rolled in EDD this past qtr.
