Forums - Gaming - 11 States Favor California Game Law

What a shame.  Kids should be able to buy games, movies, music, beer, wine, cigs  and so on at the corner store like they used to be able to do.  Oh, some government workers will continue to oppress people, maybe for the fun of it :)

Wait - so in America, you can buy any video game at any age, until this law passes? I thought they had age ratings already :S

They are guidelines. They are not enforced like movies you see in a theater.

I'm fine with retailers actually enforcing the ratings on games. It the parents job to decide what the kids play, so retailers shouldn't just openly sell them.

so americans feel that their teens and kids are so irresponsible and retarded that a video game will affect how they act in life.

in my country i can go and buy any game i want :)

Yes.  In the U.S. we also believe that watching Geico commercials between the hours of 2 and 4 A.M. causes cancer.  We are an odd bunch.  Don't worry about what Geico is, since you might not know if you aren't American.

Really? I'm now looking at the box of God of War. It says 18 on both the front and the back and has a symbol on the back which stands for violecne (if you read the booklet). What more could a parent need to deem this game inappropriate for his/her underage child?

You took the words right out my mouth.

That's good! Nomore Halo or CoD to 12 year old tards!

I fully support consistency in laws regarding the control of availability of entertainment media to children. And I support it being illegal to sell or rent R-rated (ESRB - M?) games to kids. If parents want to get them for their kids, then that's a parenting decision, and if parents don't want to pay attention to what game or movie content they are allowing their kids to see then that's a parenting decision too.

As a parent who games I think I'm a lot more careful about what my kids play than most non-gaming parents I know who have gamer kids.

If this law creates an inconsistency between games and movies then it's bad. But it's bad that movies get a free ride, not bad that games are having access to minors restricted.

In my country I'm glad the law keeps an eye out for my kid when I don't have my eye on my kid.
