Forums - Nintendo - Give Us Back The Old Nintendo (Nowgamer article)

I think Gamerace summed it up quite nicely. There are three different kinds of people attacking the Wii; those who have issues with the business model of Nintendo (which is silly), those who are bitter because Nintendo aren't the same any more and have less to offer than before for them (I fall into this category) and there are those who are simply pissed because its selling a lot more than their console of choice.

Personally, I don't like the direction they are taking but I recognize the genius in the business model even still. The problem arises when there is no middle ground on forums and in articles, usually there are pure haters and pure lovers going at each others' throats, one thinking that Nintendo is a filthy pile of doodoo and the other thinking they are near divine and utterly infallible. We need more intelligent coverage with observations rather than silly articles, posts and remarks based purely upon hatred or doting.

All this brings me to why I still like this site better than any other gaming related forum; despite the complaints about morons speaking nonsense every now and then, this place has by the most intelligent posts and posters of any of the forums I've tried and this remains the only one I go to every day, several times a day.

I don't care about old/new ip. Just gimme Diablo 3.

I completely agree with the article. I want the old Nintendo back, the Nintendo that gave me the Gamecube, which I found to be so utterly awful that it pretty much killed my interest in gaming between 2003 and 2006. It gave us the worst games in each major franchise excluding Metroid Prime, which was the consoles only saving grace. I hated Mario Sunshine, I didn't enjoy Wind Waker, there was no real Donkey Kong game, Double Dash was terrible, Star Fox Adventures was a joke... I could continue with more but I think my point has been made. The Wii versions are so superior in every way that it's not even funny when someone tries to suggest otherwise.

I can never take people who claim the Gamecube to be great seriously. I mean, were they paying attention at the time? Outside of truly loyal Nintendo fans, the thing was universally hated even more than the Wii is now, it just didn't get as much attention because Nintendo were seen to be in their place behind Sony. Now they aren't, and people get louder (yes, the arguments are the same as they were back then, there are just more of them).

It's kind of like how lots of people didn't like Wind Waker when it was released, but then all of a sudden the game is magically loved and it was a classic when Twilight Princess was released. That's how I see things with lots of people when they compare the GC and the Wii.

The concept is quite true but the unfortuante bit is the majority of the hate side seem to be the people with access to publishing tools and a loud mouth.

That is the very essence of a vocal minority.

To me, its all about the fact that nintendos first party hasn't been as good as they used to be. And I'm not talking about making casual games, I'm talking about games like Mario Kart wii, Twilight Princess and brawl being the worst in their respective series.

Bullshit. Maybe they're worse in YOUR OPINION, but at large, they are considered excellent games and for Mario kart Wii and brawl, there is very little opposition to them being either the best or one of the best of their series...

You're simply being a troll

It's a form of revisionist history. They bashed on the GC, and now that Nintendo is succeeding, they need an excuse to claim this is a bad thing. Since admitting Nintendo's old direction was making things worse, these people have to pretend that wasn't the case, or else there would be a justification for why Nintendo is doing this.

It's like Nintari forgot about the vast list of new IPs that was just a little higher up the thread, though FlingSmash was missed out...

Stupid thread with just a load of opinions on it. No real engagement in a debate.

I'm talking about core games not the junk your grandmother enjoys. Where's the new Zeldas/Marios/Metroids? Where are the new core IP's that are as good as those games? They don't exist. Nintendo's been using the same IP's since the SNES. As good as those IPs are, I can't play them forever.

So Xenoblade, the Last Story, Batallion Wars (seeing as that was missed off the GC new IP list), Captain Rainbow, Disaster Day of Crisis and Zangeki are games my nan would like? Actually the 3 you mentioned have been in use since the NES. Add Kirby, Donkey Kong to the list as well. So basically the old nintendo made new IPs when they first got into console gaming.

And you might say that some of those games that are new IPs are only average well so were the majority of the RARE games on N64.

Simply put, I don't agree with your point about the new IPs being for my gran nor with your view that games that are accessible to all are junk. Wii Sports and Sports Resort are well awesome.

Exactly! This is yet another silly article that indulges in rampant Nintendo bashing-but in defense of this article, some Nintendo fans will claim that Nintendo is flawless, and will indulge in rampant abuse of anyone who disagrees. I respect their current business model and have been mostly pleased with their first party offerings. However, I feel after the first 18 months of the Wii's life, Nintendo lost their way both in terms of the quality (Animal Crossing, Wii Music) and later (2009) the quantity of titles they were releasing for the machine. NSMB Wii, Galaxy 2 and their strong line up of revealed titles has reassured me, however. With Kirby, Donkey Kong and Wii Party later this year, and (hopefully) Zelda, Xenoblade and The Last Story coming next year, Nintendo seem to be ensuring a steady stream of quality first party titles even with the need to shift resources to 3DS.

For me, this article says less about the Wii and more about the lack of quality of debate in most gaming journalism. Nintendo bring hardware and software to the games industry I feel gaming would be much worse off without, even if it by no means appeals to certain segments of the market. Variety and different console manufacturers/games developers offering us different software and different types of hardware is exactly what gaming needs to mature and grow-I just wish these vocal parts of the gaming audience would mature and grow, too.

I think Nintendo should stop making games for all markets and simply make games for 3 nerds holding tissues in a closet.

I hope I'm not alone in this thought but why does there have to be any hatred toward any of the gaming consoles?  I own all three consoles of this generation and enjoy playing all of them.  From time to time one will receive more attention but it doesn't mean I like it the best.  I guess I'm not a true "hardcore" gamer I suppose and that's why I like all of them.  The only thing I hate is the fact that I don't have enough money to get all the games that I want to play.
