Depends on the show.

I've watched tons of anime and I can honestly say that there are a fair number of English dubtitles that show up their Japanese counterparts.  There is also the latter.   Listen to both whenever possible and then make a judgment.

Agreed

I liked fullmetal alchemist, Inuyasha and Full metal panic eng dubs.
their voices fit so well that when i heard the japanese dubs, the jpn dubs seemed awkward.

though the majority of the eng dubbings suck for other animes.

@Rubang B

I have never seen an english dub anime matching the lip movements of the characters, you are mistaken.

Subs - most dubs these days are stupidly geared towards children and that's not the scope of the original. I hate dubs.

It's as mostly everyone says: it depends on the anime. Some are good to go in Enlgish (DBZ, Cowboy Bebop...), other's are terrible (Death Note, Escaflowne).

Gundam Seed for example had great English Dubs, but in it's seque l- Gundam Seed Destiny - they didn't seem to try as hard. It got so poor that I had to soon switch to Japanese dubs and familiarize myself with a new cast of voices.

Some one should compile a list of anime's that say whether or not the English dubs are good or not. That would help a lot of people out seeing as there are many who have a rough time choosing.

By life end:

  • Wii- 100 million+
  • Xbox360- 35~40 million
  • PS3- 30 million
  • PSP- 30~32 million ------------- FAILURE
  • NDS- 85~90 million (Skeptical)  - FAILURE
  • NDS- 100 million+ (Optimistic) -- Success!

English subtitles are a must. However, there are a few exceptions like Yu Yu Hakusho, DBZ, and Inuyasha that sound better in English

I agree with Bass.exe I subs work well and dubs working well his examples are what I say also

Please English subs, hate all dubs.

definately subs - can't bear the english or german or any other languages voice overs for anime , because japanese voice actors are by far the most professional ones

See...why are the Japanese voice actors inherently the most talented? I don't understand a word of Japanese, and I'm not really the best at judging how good of a voice actor a Japanese person is.

It's certainly possible that an English actor could equal or even outperform the Japanese voice acting...

LEFT4DEAD411.COM
Bet with disolitude: Left4Dead will have a higher Metacritic rating than Project Origin, 3 months after the second game's release.  (hasn't been 3 months but it looks like I won :-p )

It really depends on how much anime you watch and how long you watch it.  Personally I can understand emotion in Japanese just as well as in English now.  I have to say that the quality of Japanese voice acting is in general much higher.  You don't have to understand the language to understand how well the convey emotion.

Part of the reason for this is that voice actors (called Seiyu in Japan) are respected members of society rather than considered second-rate actors like they are in America.  Seiyu take their jobs seriously, and even have basically oscar awards for their performances.  I think this is the main reason that the Japanese voices tend to be so much better.
