Forums - Sales - Sony making more money from software than MS.

Sony's SW -  72 Million (14.5 million first party) Includes PS3 (50.8), PS2 (6.8) and PSP (15.2) Sales

MS's SW - 46.6 Million (4.3 million first party) 360 sales only.

Using the estimates of $48 for a first party games and $12 for third party games. We see that Sony earns a total of about 1.38 billion dollars compared to 707 million dollars for MS.

Interesting seeing PS3 SW sales being higher than 360 SW even with a 5 million lead, also interesting to see Sony making so much money form it but still posting loss after loss.

its because MS barely have a "First Party" anymore.

Where did these numbers come from? I thought the 360 had a higher attach ratio?

These are the numbers from the VGChartz yearly chart. They are sales for this year so far.

Oh ok - well I guess it makes sense as the PS3 sold 1.2million more consoles this year so far.  I guess we can glean from this that new console owners buy more software.

Lets look at the yearly totals for MS and Sony as publishers since PS3 launch.

Lead - Sony by 10,218,725

2009

10 Microsoft 17,479,621

Lead - Sony by 10,524,611

2007

4 Sony Computer Entertainment 19,861,163
5 Microsoft 17,707,189

Halo 3 launched this year....

Lead - Sony by 2,153,974

I'm going to neglect 2006 since PS3 launched only in those holidays and SW sales for PS2 and PSP were very strong then. (Sony beat MS on that year too).

Sony figures include PSP and PS2 as well, but PS3 still makes up majority of the SW sales.

You are assuming that Sony earns from a PS2/PSP game as much as they do from a PS3 game, that is not true. The main point still applies, but Sony has three platforms while Microsoft has one.

It would be interesting to see how many games the two sell on their respective digital services, and how much money that makes for them.

lol $48 for a first party game? PS3 games don't even cost $48 in stores on average.

All i see is Sony making profit from PSN, SW, PSP/PS2, HOME etc. And now that the PS3 is making profit, how is it even possible to end up with a loss in the financial report?
