So we're silly for not liking the same games as you guys? I'm sorry but Vanquish looks kind of gimmicky and stupid to me. I prefer shooters like Half-Life 2, Deus Ex and Far Cry, games where you have to think (and aim) instead of simply mashing buttons and slow motion/bullet time is getting ridiculously overused by now. I've been playing shooters since the Wolfenstein 3D and Blake Stone days, I loved games such as Quake and Unreal as well and games such as Call of Duty and Half-Life added atmosphere and depth to the genre. Games like Vanquish are nothing but flashbangs and fireworks and noise, it requires little to no effort and is, sadly, becoming the hallmark of the genre in modern days.

Call me an old grumpy bastard but this is how I feel and I still think Slimebeast's post was spot on, we just happen to think alike. As far as not having played the game; true, of course I haven't, that doesn't mean I can't say that I dislike it, I haven't seen the Sex and the City movie either but I'm 100% certain I'd think it was shit since I find the series to be an afront to mankind...

I'm happy u agree with me.

Anyone else here prefer slow-paced shooters for the thinking man?

Its not about "slow paced" vs fast paced. Its all about controls and challenge. If a game integrates fast paced shooting and slow mo with solid controls and challenge, there is no reason for one to dislike it compared to a slower standard shooter.

My issue these days is that all these newer games tend to take away controls and user intraction for fast paced, on screen holywood type action.

Like that E3 trailer for COD:black ops... WTF is that helicopter part? Am I controling that? is it on rails? Can I even die? Why is it that a game like COD becomes a completely different controls game when you step in to a vehicle, while Halo/battlefield games keep a similar control scheme?

I think the helicopter part in COD looked cool. Brings variation.

"Slow paced" was just my way to sum up the characteristics of classic shooters vs these hectic modern ones.

Name a hectic modern shooter you are talking about.I have no clue what you mean.

Call of Duty games look hectic but they are not that hectic as they are scripted as hell and guide you through the whole game, holding your hand at all times. If you don't mind the sections which are scripted (like that helicopter part)...what part bothers you?

I mean hectic as in tons of stuff going on just to wow the player. Games with production values Jerry Bruckheimer style. Slow-mo/bullet time, shaky-cam, motion-blur, blood splashing on the screen, overdone explosions, switching camera angles, fast transitions between cut-scenes and gameplay, blurry effect & heart beats when you take damage etc.

Games like Call of Duty: MW 1-2, Killzone 2-3, Crysis 1-2, Lost Planet 1-2, Stranglehold, Gears of War 1-3, FEAR 2, Medal of Honor (Airborne and the new one), Uncharted 2 and Vanquish.

I see, you are talking just about visuals.I agree that they can be dizying...

You do control the Helicopter, we had a preview of it and the developer was quite clear that it was not scripted and you had full control of the helicopter.

...

Btw Disolitude, Halo: Reach has an airborne space battle segment, what do you say about that?

So I can fly off radar and shoot the goats on the mountain? Or crash straight in to a rock if I want?  Not from the footage I've seen...

The key to all halo games and why their vehicle sections are great is that the vehicle scenes never feel like they are tacked on. If they can make space combat feel like its part of gamplay and have intuitive controls like with other vehilcles, I'm all for it...

Very few games are able to do this. For example, Gears of War 1 and 2 have those dreadful driving with flashlightand flying sequences which completely change the games core controls, change the perspective and feel like they were put in as bonus games just to provide "variety".

Those I really cant stand...

Yeah I have to say this game looks savage. Its definitley one of my top anticipated titles of this fall. Shinji is a mastermind and Capcom must be kicking themselfs after he left.

Just telling you what he said, you do control the helicopter (movement and aiming).  Now I doubt they let you smash into rocks or shoot goats but that's more to do with the area they restrict you to and not how much control you have over the helicopter.  Probably just those classic invisible walls developers like to use.

What I saw made it look like you had control of the helicopter but the area you were allowed to move around in was fairly limited.

Yeah, I guess thats better than it being on rails. I don't know why but that didn't look like it will be fun to control... But it sure is fun to look at. Iceman and Maverick style!
