How about we look at the Big Picture for third party games on the PS3 and Wii:
Total third party sales for Wii in february:429,500 ...
The PS3 has a total of 303,500 third party sales in february |
Yes ,with fewer games and half the install base ...hardly a triumph for the Wii .

And look at Madden: The Wii Version has got longer legs... next month the difference will maybe stay at 20k copies and in the end at about 10k copies... there goes the last hope for PS3 3rd party defenders...
Edit: even Tony Hawk sold better on Wii. And Call of Duty, Sonic, the exclusive games...
OMG I can't believe this firs the Wii isn't selling enough third-party games, when someones shows that they are selling more than the PS3, the arguement becomes, well they should be selling way more than the PS3, they shouldn't be ahead by a little bit. This is a issue because Sony needs third-party games to be a sucess, and Nintendo doesn't yet they are out selling the PS3 in the third-party software department.
Not to mention that PS3 3rd-party costs more so they need to sell more. Why do you think there are so few PS3 3rd-party exclusives to date? They're all on or going to be on 360 at the least. I can't even name any already out off the top of my head except maybe RR7 which I heard was just an upgraded port of RR6 on 360.
edit: wow just noticed Sonic Wii outsold VF5 on PS3, that's interesting wonder if it holds up.

No doubt ...
I don't think that it would be fair to say that the Wii's third party game sales were fantastic but it is not performing all that poorly either. Where I do thing the triumph for the Wii has occured is that third party games on the Wii have been selling at decent levels even though they're (in general) not that good of games.
I'm not trying to be overly hard on the third party developers, but I do think that many developers didn't see the potential for the Wii until E3 2006 and then they started to rapidly port games or start original development; most of these ports have been pretty bad. There are exceptions, I think Ubisoft got a lot right with their original Wii games but lacked time to polish a couple of them, and EA has been generally very good at porting games.

I don't know where you get off claiming that UbiSoft isn't putting any effort into their games opposed to EAGames.
UbiSoft has indeed ported many games and continues to do so but they also brought us origonal properties like RedSteel as well as an exclusive version of Rayman:RavingRabbids. UbiSoft already confirmed numerous new IP's and titles in the works for the Nintendo Wii they should be revealed shortly. UbiSoft began developing RedSteel back in 2005 on the earliest GameCube dev kit at that time Raving Rabbids and other titles followed suit. None of the games were built using Alpha kits which means none had final hardware to work with. EAGames single exclusive title SSX-Blur was started in early 2006 with finalized Alpha kits, these finalized alpha kits are Wii's true power yet we saw a SSX game that wasn't much of an improvement graphics wise then the ones on GameCube. EA descided to cheap out just like all the other companies are right now giving us crappy ports like NeedForSpeedCarbon and Madden07.
In the end I think third parties could be killing Wii and Nintendo's image of quality! Nintendo themselves are making a conceded effort to draw third party support such as giving third parties huge periods of time without first party competition. NintendoI suspect is also cutting the quality of their own first party games to give third parties a better chance at competing this is very very bad. Nintendo's first parties are well respected but for example the screen for Disaster:DayOfCrisis looked awful!
Right now the only third parties really carrying their weight are Konami and Sega. UbiSoft and EAGames have improved their tactics but neither company is really putting fourth genuine effort!

Actually its because Ubisofts games have been poorly done with tacked on controls, while EA's games have been of higher quality (Gamespot rated the Wii version of Maddenhiger than the one on PS3 and 360), also the disaster screen shown was from an early build of the game
Predictions:Sales of Wii Fit will surpass the combined sales of the Grand Theft Auto franchiseLifetime sales of Wii will surpass the combined sales of the entire Playstation family of consoles by 12/31/2015 Wii hardware sales will surpass the total hardware sales of the PS2 by 12/31/2010 Wii will have 50% marketshare or more by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! It was a little over 48% only)Wii will surpass 45 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2008 (I was wrong!! Nintendo Financials showed it fell slightly short of 45 million shipped by end of 2008)Wii will surpass 80 Million in lifetime sales by the end of 2009 (I was wrong!! Wii didn't even get to 70 Million)

Why? they're not all the same games. It's silly to post numbers for the entirety of third party titles, because it ignores what the games actually are. The fact is that the success of the Wii has led to a dramatic increase in third party support. Many of those games have been rush job cash ins. Many of the recent announcements aren't. But there has been plenty of Success. I think that EA, Ubisoft Activision, Sega, Atari and Atlus are pretty happy with how their titles are doing.
As for the original thread statement; That developers won't make good games because they won't sell enough, but will make crappy games because they'll sell well... WHA!? That doesn't even make any sense. Ask Ubisoft which game has been more profitable, Farcry Vengeance or Rayman Raving Rabbids?
I'm a mod, come to me if there's mod'n to do.
Chrizum is the best thing to happen to the internet, Period.
Serves me right for challenging his sales predictions!
Bet with dsisister44: Red Steel 2 will sell 1 million within it's first 365 days of sales.
For those of you who say the Wii has sold more 3rd party games total. Yeah it has. But then agian, the PS3 has sold a large sum in comparison. And the Wii has a MUCH wider array of games.
Rayman, Red Steel, Trauma Center, Some raceing one I think...
Basically the Wii has 3rd party games in almost every class. The PS3 has 3rd party games in... well... Sports... Sports... Massive multi-plats... and that's it.
Almost every game that is on the Wii/PS3 the PS3 is outselling it, or doing as good.
EDIT: The games also cost 10$ more.
Multi-plat games on the PS3 are more expensive than the Wii? Yeah they are, it takes more money to optimize from a 360 to PS3, than PS2 to Wii.
And on this level, What happens to Wii multi-plat support when PS2 vanishes? That's where 90% of Wii games 'engines/game' is coming from. Either that or old X-box/GameCube games.
3rd party wins the war. Sony is doing quite well on 3rd party right now.
