Did you miss the part about a trainer that wants to separate people and Pokémon? Or High Link Or Global Link?
And I can think of further additions. Contests, breeding, Secret Bases, berries, etc.

Yes. That's not part of the main story.
I tend not to use extra modes like that. Or online multiplayer, because I don't know the people I'm playing with. It interests some people, but I buy Pokemon games for the main story progression only.

If you're going to deny yourself a game based on story and music, then so be it. I'm not you but I personally think it's foolish to count a game out just because of that.

I didn't mean story really. I meant gameplay mechanics and content. Imagine if every Final Fantasy was FF1 with better graphics, characters renamed and the world laid out differently. That would be OK for the first few times, but for the fifth time in a row...
But video game music is more important to me than the games itself, since I don't listen to any music with words in and video game music is therefore the only music I can buy or listen to.
I agree it's only affecting me and no one else if I choose not to.

Then why point out that something new isn't part of the main story?
Your words were: "The non-battle portions of the game has hardly changed since Red/Blue". That is not true many things have been added since the first generation, just because you do not utilize them doesn't mean they do no exist.
As for gameplay mechanics: holding items, steel and dark types, abilities, double-battles, weather conditions, changing how attack damage is calculated based on the attack itself instead of its type, triple battles, etc.
