It will be interesting this holiday season to see if the Infinity Ward situation has any effect on the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops. Pacific Crest Securities analyst Evan Wilson believes that Black Ops will sell 12 million copies, up from his previous estimate of 10 million. Wilson has spoken to his firm’s retail sources and has found that pre-orders for Black Ops are outpacing those of Modern Warfare 2.
Activision has gone on record noting that each Call of Duty title outperforms its predecessor, but Wilson believes Black Ops will be the end of that trend. Wilson believes that “competition, weaker marketing, and the Infinity Ward situation” will prevent Black Ops from reaching Modern Warfare 2’s staggering sales of 16 million during the fourth quarter of 2009.
Call of Duty: Black Ops is scheduled for release on November 9, 2010.
