Forums - Sales - Pacther on December 2007 sales in the USA

The question of Wii sales is a question of how many are stockpiled. Nintendo says they make 1.8 million in a month, and it's safe to assume those will all sell. So how many are sitting on shelves waiting for their strategic deployment? Roughly 2 million seems reasonable here.

The other two consoles should see an extra boost beyond the normal holiday surge, as Wii shortfalls drive customers to alternatives. I think that 1.5 million 360s and 1.2 million PS3s are the upper limit of what's possible.

I don't have Americas preliminary data really.  My hunch is sales for all platforms in the USA will be down 10-25% this week vs. Black Friday, and ioi seemed to verify that.  But I don't know if say, Wii was down 10%, or down 25% and thats a huge difference in sales until the data is posted.

360 a bit high,and wii a bit low

I haven't yet seen anyone give their reasons on why they don't expect the 360 to have a normal December boost (doubling sales between Nov and Dec is normal). I think TheSource's numbers are reasonable.

Sounds good, I was just curious because I wasn't sure how much to read into your predictions where it concerns this week's sales.

November
Wii - 1.05 million
Xbox 360 - 800,000
PS3 - 390,000

December
Wii - 2 million
Xbox 360 - 1.5 to 1.75 million
PS3 - 850,000 to 900,000

Seems to be in line with this:

November
Wii: 1,000,000 - 1,500,000
360: 700,000 - 1,000,000
PS3: 250,000 - 350,000

December
Wii: 2,000,000 - 3,000,000
360: 1,400,000 - 2,000,000
PS3: 500,000 - 700,000

Only the PS3 estimates are higher than the historical trends would indicate, and that can be explained by the price drop / new model, and the fact that sales were so low to begin with.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games. - Activision CEO Bobby Kotick

Good guesses Source! Seem right enough, but I'm not sure the 360 will move that much though.

360-A bit high
wii- about right although I think it will be supply constrained
ps3- the wii shortage should give it an extra boost so I wouldn't be surprised if it hit a million for December.

That's it. I'm gonna take Pachter's job. He doesn't deserve it.
