i am atheist and i view it as my religion.  Now I agree Christians have been dicks about pushing their religion on others, but so have atheists.  Muslims too actually.

Basically, more than anything I believe in the freedom of religion and wish all side did as well.

So... Atheism is your religon?

What are your atheist rituals? Who is the higher-up in the Atheist church?

Religon isn't just believing, religon is a system, Atheists (like me) believe that there is no higher power, however, that is only a belief, nothing other than that.

Really?  No one forces me to go to church.  In fact I haven't been to church in ages.  Yet I still believe in my religion.  Religion does not require groups at all.  In fact it is probably best to practice religion by yourself and get your own unique experience and views from it.

At the same time, aetheists are now forming groups with higher-ups.  This article basically just stated that.  So even by your own definition Atheism is becoming a form of systematic religion.

Atheism isn't a religion, it is merely a belief. Just because some people speak up compared to others, doesn't mean others will stand with them. Atheism furnishes people the right to live their life how they want to without the demands of believing in a god. There are no rituals and there is no devotion. Those things are reserved for religion. I'm agnostic and even I do not have rituals.

Atheism isn't a belief (or at least does not need to be). It can just be a lack of belief.

Two people with the opinions "I believe there is no God" and "I do not believe there is a God" are put into the same category despite being quite different.

People who believe and people who don't are still subscribing to belief. The difference between a religious person and an atheist is lack of devotion and faith. Most atheists also tend to believe in existentialism and follow science to a higher degree. Some just follow life as they see it.

I would say awesome, but then I think about how America's education system is broken. Normally, atheism is supported by education, so something doesn't make sense. Now me thinks this is probably some scare tactic, created by religious folks to get other religious folks all riled up. Remember, we gots elections comin upins.

From European Values statistics 2008: http://ec.europa.eu/public_opinion/archives/eb/eb69/eb69_values_en.pdf

"It should also be noted that 27% of respondents in Cyprus, 26% in Malta and 19% in Romania mentioned religion as one of the most important values for them personally, compared with 7% on average for the European Union."

Religion simply isn't widely encouraged in Europe. As sad as it is for it to be the last one standing, as far as Christianity goes, the Roman Catholic church will probably last the longest in terms of any real influence, and they've been working hard on alienating people as of lately.

''Love'' ''Peace'' ''Freedom'' ''Justice''...  I think you'll find that religion STANDS UP for all those things

Yes I'm quite sure all the persecuted gays agree with you on that one. To be fair, most religious books are a pick and mix affair with violence and peace, hate and love and so on...

its great that you judge religion based on some fanatics and that you take the stories from bible too literally ( the ones from old testament, which is btw irrelevant to most christians), nice job

a) I wasn't judging religion on a few fanatics.I was giving an example of how not all is merry about religion. Also i do have a valid point, there are quite a few countries where it is actually illegal to be a homosexual which is quite frankly absurd. The only "evidence" to support the outlawing of homosexuality is usually some religious book.

b) Sorry when did I take the stories from the bible literally? Even when i was a catholic I never seriously took all of the tales seriously.

c) Who says i was talking exclusively about christianity?

So its the religion's fault that some people are filled with hatered and use religion and God as an excuse to harm other people?? What religious book is teaching that??? Almost all religious books (christain, jewish) have the same message of peace and love, its just that some people ignore that and choose to look at the fundmentalists and nut jobs that use religion as an excuse and then by some miracle think that all religious people are like that. And im sorry for all those gay people that got killed but i know for sure that God desnt hate them and that religion didnt killed them, but people.

No but the books often contain passages that are ambiguous enough for people to interpret the same passage very differently.Yes Religion does often promote those values, but as I said it is a pick and mix bag and you can also find areas filled with killing and such.

Just a little niggle, how do you know that God doesn't hate them?

because created them that way? They didnt choose to be gay, and there fro, being gay can not be sin

No sorry what i meant was: what evidence do you have that God doesn't hate them? I can see that this isnt going anyway though because inevitably you will say that the bible is your proof,at which point i leave .

Logic is my proof. A person did not choose to be gay, it was born that way and it could do nothing about it. A sinner can choose if he wants to comitt a sin or not.

I think it's great.  But them I'm an atheist so I guess I would, wouldn't I?

But actually, it is great.

I have my empathies on you..Yeah speaking of feeling great, when the fear of God is totally lost...who gives a damn anyway though?! Oh and when one wants to be reasonable on all accounts here..God please show these people the light and save the country..
