Normally people say they would buy something and then don't rather than the other way around.

Yes, glasses-free 3DTVs already exist. But even though they seem obviously superior they won't be successful for at least a decade. It's not just that they are extremely expensive (> 10.000$), they also have serious disadvantages when compared to 3DTVs with glasses. Displays like the one in the 3DS only work if the viewer is exactly in front of them. There is technology that makes it possible to see the 3D effect from more than one position, but that comes at the cost of reduced resolution. All these disadvantages have already led Philips to give up on glasses-free 3DTVs for at least a couple of years. |
you know what, im going to put my support for hologram TV. It doesnt really exist at all yet, but I bet it will be successful in 20 years so I think 3D will fail and holograms will take over! Screw the overly expensive 3DTVs with crap tech.

Actually Nintendo is working for Sony adventage this time. N is bringing 3d tech into affordable price range thus creating much more widespread 3d aware userbase.
But what about glasses ? Well the glasses are here to stay for next few years. Sharp 3D technology used in 3DS offers extremly limited view angle which means it can only ever be used for LCD monitors and portable devices. To actually play using family tv with friends they will have no other choice then accepting glasses or nothing.
So unless someone invents how to make glassless 3d for more than 1 person (which at the moment seems to be impossible using current display technologies).

How many 3d movies are actually worth watching again? less than a handful. how many of those are out now on a 3d blu-ray? none. how many tv channels are broadcasting 3d regularly right now or soon? none. how many 3d games are out right now and will be out within the next 6 months?

But it's not what is available now for many people. Those investing in a new TV may upgrade and go for the 3D option as they know there are 3D channels on the way(depending where you live, obviously), plus 3D movies coming out(and some already out), plus 3D games on the way. They'll have that TV for several years so makes sense to get one with the ability to watch the 3D content when it is available shortly.

The 3DS is what economists call a "disruptive technology" meaning it is a technology that affects their competitor's other areas of business such as Sony's multi-thousand dollar 3D television. Come 2011, when Sony is pushing 3D games on the Move to get consumers to buy their 3D televisions, consumers will see a $200-300 3D glass free technology via Nintendo 3DS and start to ask why is Sony asking me to drop $3k or more for a 3D television requiring and extra $100-200 for 3D glasses when my son/daughter has a 3D handheld that does not require and expensive television and glasses? This is the pickle Sony will be in and it is a hard one considering all the R&D, production and marketing costs they have accumulated to create their 3D televisions. |
I'd say the vast majority of people buying a new TV will be totally unaware of the existence of the 3DS.

Seriously, what is the point of that post. Weren't we having the same post aboout HD, BLU-RAY, DVD, you should know that's always something that happens with new technology.
And 3D is not a Sony product, they are pushing it hard, but you can actually support it.

Its different to the HD, Blu-ray and DVD option though. I adopted those as soon as I could. I think I am a good barometer here, I love a gadget, new tech, im a gadget whore... but I am totally unconvinced by this. It has nothing to do with sony pushing it, and everything to do with Samsung, Sony, Panasonic, Hitachi, Philips and all the other tech companies hoping we fall for this too early and bail them out of a hole they dug for themselves. I aint biting and I doubt many others will in the next 12 months. Bring on glassless Tv's and see adoption soar. But thats a while off. |
You really don't do any research for an early adopter, 3D galessless is here, it's just vey expensive. It's coming to the masses as soon as prices comes down. 3D is here to stay just like Blu-ray, that failure (Lol).

lol it's like the PS3 at launch the way you're putting it :D! "How many PS3 games are there that are good?" "How many Blu Ray Movies are out there?", etc. I'm just saying the way you put it is funny and true.
Like hell as if anyone would buy a 3DTV just to rewatch Avatar in 3D or Alice in Wonderland, etc.
Sure if you feel that your TV is outdated and want to upgrade to a new TV, you may consider a 3D TV but for the majority of owners of HD TVs, there's very little reason to buy a 3D TV right now. Did people honestly excited that Sony would film a few FIFA matches in 3D?
And I don't know about you people but I find 3D glasses so uncomfortable. Mainly because I do wear glasses but man, wearing 3D glasses over normal glasses is just retarded. Hey it's not anyone's fault that in order to watch 3D you need to wear 3D glasses but it's bloody annoying.
But alternately, once prices start to drop and bundle glasses, then you'll start to see pretty good adoption rates but until then, the majority aren't gonna go out there and buy 3D TVs...

They had 3d photes back in the 1800s. This is nothing new. People don't like having to wear special stuff to see 3D. Sure it was cool when it came out, and interesting to look at occationally, but unless it works without special equipment (ie: 3ds), few will want it in their living room.
| patapon said: So 43% of the Japanese population say the price of 3D TVs is just right, 30% say they have no problem with wearing glasses, 60% feel that 3D presently has enough content to justify interest, and 31.2% are heavily interested/intend to purchase a 3D TV from the get go? That's actually very good news for advocates of 3D considering prices will go down quickly and 3D content will increase. |
Actually you can't just reverse the results of a survey like that. It just doesn't work.
