Forums - Nintendo - I still want Sega Saturn games on VC

I know I've had this discussion a few times a long time back.  Sega Saturn was weird console (hard to emulate?) and emulating on VC might not be possible due to size or how the games were programmed (heard from a few).  There are emulators out there for Saturn so that should be possible (Wii should be able to run this emulator if it can handle N64 games).  With the SD channel now I believe Nintendo can get away with making VC d/ls bigger if that is the case.  Anyways, I know it can be possible and I really want to play a few Saturn games.  I have Nights into Dream, Fighters Megamix, Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, and a few more that I bought a long time ago when I got a free Saturn.  Well that Saturn broke and I could go buy another but I really don't feel like having another console hooked up to my tv.  Also, this would expose people to Saturn gems that they either were not alive, too young, or didn't have the system when it was out.   Show the Saturn some love and put it on the VC.

So what I got from this discussion is probably not possible for Saturn for Wii.

While others want Atari 2600, Sega CD/32x, and more arcade games.

It takes nearly high-end PC's to emulate Saturn games, they were designed rather oddly in that regard so I doubt we will ever see them on the VC

personally I would like to see Atari 2600, PS1 (3rd party) and more Japanese-only games ported over.

Takes a high end PC to emulate Saturn games..  Yikes..  One wouldn't really think that would be the case.  I suppose there would be no way to firmware update the Wii to be able to handle the code better to rely less on processing power?  Or how about someone making a better Saturn emulator that doesn't require high end PC?  I am sure it can be done.

Atari 2600 would be a logical step for VC.  Would be easy and there are a ton of decent quality Atari 2600 games.  I wouldn't mind playing Bezerker and a few other Atari 2600 games.  PS1 3rd party games I doubt will ever be put onto VC unless in form of a WW remake.

The Saturn had a really, really messed up CPU system. Something like multicore ahead of its time, but really closer to the 2 discrete CPUs that the Jaguar had working in tandem. Handling that sort of thing is very difficult for PC CPU systems, or anything else for that matter.

Like if you've ever played Sonic Gems Collection, you'll notice that Sonic R (which was a Saturn game) that they have running on that compilation is actually the PC version of Sonic R. There's a very good reason for that.

The main problem would be space issues, but compression techniques these days could work around that, but the insurmountable one is that the games would pretty much all have to be recoded.

Thanks for more detailed explanation.  I doubt they will go back and recode them because of lack of interest in the system.  I always wanted a Saturn but never got one till it was too late then it broke before I could even play most of the games I listed in the original post.  Sure it didn't do so well but it had some quality games on it.  Sucks that it has to be so difficult to emulate.  I might eventually just buy another Saturn but I wanted it to be on VC for ease of use and to expose more people to the Saturn collection.

I would really like to see Intellivision games. I know many would end up with vastly different control schemes, but that wouldn't stop me from buying them by the dozen.

Saturn emulators are not stable enough for commercial use and Saturn games were never that popular in the first place.

Well we know the Wii can emulate the NeoGeo. While the Sega Saturn lacked the RAM to deliver perfect NeoGeo ports. So I presume the Wii can handle Sega Saturn emulation, but I imagine the superior specs of the HD consoles makes it easier (cheaper) to do.

Edit: Also, I don't know why I didn't mention this before. But the Wii can emulate the N64 and that console is far more powerful than the Saturn.

GameTap uses a Sega Saturn emulator. I would consider that an emulator "stable enough for commercial use."

I can't say the Saturn had a lot of "popular" games simply because the Saturn didn't sell very well. However, it definitely had great games. Putting them on PSN and XBLA would allow far more people to play them than ever before.
