Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto Ready to Create a New Character

This is the year for it, he says

Nintendo superman Shigeru Miyamoto is a man who can extract esoteric game concepts out of the most mundane things. So what's he been up to lately?

During a Q&A session with investors (as translated by Andraisang), Miyamoto explained exactly what he's been keeping himself busy with outside of work. Swimming and youth guidance, apparently.

Also, I'm still full of energy. Recently, I've been doing a lot of things – continuing to work hard at swimming, for instance, and also having exchanges with school kids, doing such things a serving on a neighborhood youth guidance committee.

Miyamoto has in the past mentioned how Nintendo doesn't really like when he talks about his hobbies, as they tend to turn into important titles for Nintendo. He got a dog and Nintendogs happened. He got a cat and now Nintendogs + Cats is happening. He likes to guess the weight and measurements of things and delivered Wii Fit. Gardening? Pikmin.

Ready for creative action

Pikmin also happens to be the last time Miyamoto created an original character, which was first released back in 2000. We're not sure what a Pikmin's life expectancy is, but we'd wager the first batch is all dead by now. That leaves plenty of room for something new.

I think that next year I can probably deliver something new. I'm still active on the development scene, so please look forward to [my output]. It's been nearly 10 years since I made the Pikmin character, so I feel this is the year where I must at long last make a new character. This is as far as I'll answer today.

Don't be surprised if whatever he cooks up includes swimming youths.

The time is finally right for "Roscoe:  The Fish With Human Legs"!  I predicted this two years ago!!

I googled it but the link won't work anymore:  http://www.google.com/#hl=en&source=hp&q=roscoe the fish with human legs d21lewis "roscoe the fish with human legs "&aq=0p&aqi=g-p1g9&aql=&oq=roscoe, &gs_rfai=CbT_eGd0tTJjWL4-UoASsvOGbBQAAAKoEBU_Qr4ui&fp=3340bd4cc4e0f847

I think it's time to see a new character from him, yes.

We have seen a good number of new brands(even only in this generation:Endless ocean,FlingSmash,Disaster,Wii__,Tomodachi,Brain Training,Xenoblade,The Last Story,Soma Bringer,ASH,etc.etc.),but there is the lack of a new great character.

Maybe...a mermaid? XD

Forget new IPs Miyamoto, just rerelease that one Zelda game you've been making over and over since 1987.

LOL

I hoped for Zelda this year...fortunately,even if it will come next year, this Holiday we'll be pleased by the return to the roots of Donkey Kong.

I cannot wait to see what Miya will create this time.

So... in 2011 we will have Zelda S.S, Pikmin 3, and a new Miyamoto game that could become a new franchise all from Miyamoto? Sounds fine to me as long as he doesn't ditch the Pikmin franchise for this new character since the Pikmin franchise is AMAZING!

I wonder what genre the game will adopt? I am not sure why but I think that Nintendo's new protagonist could potentially be an elemental spirit.

This generation lacked the introduction of a very original character (sorry, Nathan Drake doesn't need imagination to be created, just a lot of stereotypes)

I hope Miyamoto fixes that as he did with Pikmin back in the GC generation.

You are correct guiduc! Some developers are incredibly lazy when forming new IPs!

And you think it took ages to Miyamoto to create Link? "The guy who is choosen by the godesses to retablish equity and peace in a corrupted kingdom"...I heard that a thousand of times...-_-

I don't even speak of Mario's "very original" scenarios!
