Not if they shelf the franchise indefinitely.
e

I don't think Nintendo will shelf the Metroid series because Other M sold "ONLY" 500K copies in it's first month!!! In addition, the Metroid series on average has been about 800K-1.4M units in sales and in any case Other M is on it's way in acheiveing those numbers. (I see sales of ~600K by christmas2010 and ~740K within a year of release and  850K-1M lifetime)  The Conduit which is getting a sequel got even less than what Other M sold in month during it's lifetime.  In addition, piracy (the Wii's achille's heel) has also played a part in softening sales for the game. One of the torrent sites I follow had 47K download for the title since it was released; and that's just one site. (that's why piracy is a cancer to this industry and I don't believe in that homebrew crap)

yeah because it's the developer's only halfway decent selling game. I bet Nintendo or even Team Ninja have some projects, that could lead to more profit.

Yeah, one of them being Other M, which is already a profitable venture for both Team Ninja and Nintendo; seeing the average cost to develop and market a  Wii game and how many copies  this game had already sold and should sell this holiday season!!!

they'll make a relatively small profit at the end of the day.
But you don't seem to get what I'm saying. Nintendo has much much much bigger game series than Metroid. They could've made Mario Party 9 or even Wii Music 2 *shudder* in the meantime, so again no matter how profitable Metroid is, it's making less money than these potential titles, thus even losing profit, that is admittedly not there, but easily could have been there.

I'll say it again a huge company like Nintendo doesn't give a fuck about the profits of Metroid Other M. They're way to small to get really noticed, thus making it at least possible for Nintendo to maybe just shelf the whole franchise.

Except Nintendo rightly doesn't work that way. All series have to be profitable, yes, but Nintendo still maintain a wide range of series that don't make the sales that their top games do (Fire Emblem, Advance Wars, Kirby etc. etc.) because a console needs more than just the infrequent big titles, it needs a regular stream of mid-level hits too.

And no, Nintendo would never have put Sakamoto and Team Ninja on Wii Music 2 (or Mario Party while Wii Party was in development), because that would have to be done by one of their top teams.

and yet there are some franchises they seldom bring back, so you'll never know

And I never said that Team Ninja would do Wii Music 2 or Mario Party 9 lol. They will obviously have their own projects like Dead Or Alive 5.

You said that Nintendo could have put the resources into making another game. In practice, Nintendo only makes those big games with their better teams, so the only real opportunity costs here were making another title that would likely be on the same level. They could have for example made a mindless action game free of bullshit, but unlikely the next Wii Music.

It is largely a technical exercise but feedback is appreciated.

A mindless action game free of bullshit? This sounds like a job for Team Ni-

Wait.

Most Nintendo games don't suffer from used game sales.  The reason is that the quality usually denotes that people KEEP their Nintendo-made games.  You can't buy a used game if there are none to buy.  I believe M:OM will be one of the rare exceptions that suffers at the hand of trade-in amount, and people will be able to buy it used rather than throw down the $50 for a new copy.  I am ridiculously obsessed with the Metroid series and I almost never trade in any games, yet I actually did cash in on Other M.  Every other person I know personally who played it felt the same way about it as I did.  Some people even hated it MORE.  That says something.

I figure that what this will do is cause Nintendo to put much less money into the next iteration, which is fine by me because that means less cut scenes (which are very expensive) and probably less commercials, which I'm not concerned about as it does not affect game quality.  Nintendo will not bench Samus Aran.  She is one of the Nintendo's mascots since the beginning, and a loyal fan base, albeit smaller than Mario's or Link's, is still relevant and important to the big N.

this is pointless Nintendo WILL NOT SHELF the Metroid series based on Other M (who is on track to reaching the typical Metroid sales figures).  Sure it's a possiblity, but it's also possible that Nintendo will quit the hardware market and be a software maker as well!!! It's possible, but just like shelving the Metroid series; it just WON'T HAPPEN!!!

Eh, the difference between a Nintendo series being shelved and Nintendo leaving the hardware business, is that there are precedents for the former, and in the very same series too!

The only Metroid titles this is tracking to beat are Hunters (though we don't have full data), Pinball and re-releases.

This shelving thing for Metroid is still idiotic...it sounds like the same dumbass people who were saying that Nintendo should/might go software a la Sega because N64 and Gamecube were not successful!!!  All this is just a bunch of wishful thinking from anti-Nintendo fanboys who are just butt hurt that the Wii is kicking their consoles collective ass!!! C'mon let's get real if it wasn't for the piracy issue and lazy 3rd party efforts Nintendo will kick their competitor's ass so hard they'd be smelling what they had for breakfast.  I' m not even gonna comment on this again as this is just sounding a bit too juvenile and only an idiot would think a profitable series will get shelved!!!

Don't condescend to people in this topic, especially when you're wrong.

Profitability isn't the only thing that determines whether or not Nintendo might back off of a series for a while. They expected Other M to double the sales of Corruption - essentially matching the first Metroid Prime, and even surpassing it. If it ever sells a third that much it will be a miracle.

Shit, Nintendo shelved 2-D Mario from the SNES days all the way up through New Super Mario Bros. Do you really think they're above backing off Metroid for a while?

I'm not saying it will happen - I think it won't - but pretending that the Metroid continuation is a foregone conclusion (especially a continuation in a demonstrably failed direction like Other M) is presumptuous.

I think it will reach the million mark, 1 145 000 lifetime... 770 america. everything depends on the christmas sales 2010 and if it will have legs in europe, like silent hill shattered memories...

I doubt it wil reach 1M. Once people started getting their hands on it, sales quickly dropped, even in Japan. I purchased my copy used, only two weeks after the game came out. The seller agreed it just didn't feel like Metroid.

They only shelved 2D mario because of the "ZOMGZ 3D HYPEEEEE" back in the 1990's.

And even in a lot of the 2000's

But now with the Wii they can bring 2D back cus they can't compete graphically with PS360.

2D Mario being shelved for so long had reasons, and good ones. But was a bad decision, I can only wonder how much New Super Mario Gamecube would have helped the gamecube....
