Forums - General - Bugsy Malone: The Little-Known But Awesome Movie Thread

Let's get a couple questions out of the way:
-- Why is Bugsy Malone in the thread title?  It's the movie that inspired this thread.
-- Why did I make this thread?  I felt like it.  I suddenly had an urge to make a thread for people to talk about movies that are obscure but which they enjoyed a lot.  Maybe other people will like them too that would never have known about them if not for this.
-- So what the hell is Bugsy Malone anyway?

Well, very briefly, Bugsy Malone is a gangster movie.  With child actors.  (Most of them dropped right off the map after this, but you may recognize Jodie Foster and Scott Baio.)  I think I'd go so far as to call it one of my favorite musicals.

Instead of guns, the gangs fight with custard* pies, and the movie is driven by the introduction of "Splurge Guns" that shoot custard instead.  The guns look remarkably like the Striker shotgun, although they're obviously equivalent to the Tommy gun.  Cars are pedaled, et cetera.  But everything is played straight, with a couple exceptions.  One "death" scene is particularly poignant.

*Or something.

So what movies do you love that no one has heard of?

My advice to fanboys: Brag about stuff that's true, not about stuff that's false. Predict stuff that's likely, not stuff that's unlikely. You will be happier, and we will be happier.

IMDB says it was Alan Parker.

Bill Murray is such an awesome actor :)

nintendo and sega fan since i was old enough to hold a game controller.

note: my games collection on my profile is only 20ish% complete, i've got a boatload of 360,saturn and dreamcast games to add and a few ps3 games, thanks :)

Nice thread idea and yes, Bugsy Malone is a fun movie and still unique.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090180/    To Live and Die in L.A. / 1985 / dir.: William Friedkin / with William Peterson, Willem Dafoe

To Live and Die in L.A. is not as brilliant as Friedkin's 70s masterpiece The French Connection, but imo one of the best cop/crime thrillers of the 80s.

Happy Go Lucky is the only one I can think of at the moment. It is delightful. Not much of a plot to it but the lead actress is superb and so is the ending.

This sucks, I thought I was more in tune to indie and less known moveis than I am. I will watch some of these suggestions without a doubt.

Rashomon (1951)

The film depicts the rape of a woman and the murder of her samurai husband, through the widely differing accounts of four witness, including the bandit/rapist, the wife, the dead man speaking through a medium, and lastly the narrator, the one witness that seems the most objective and least biased.

I also believe it was the first Asian film to win an Oscar (it won an Honorary award).

I just watched Seven Samurai this weekend and it was every bit as amazing as I expected. Akira Kurasowa is a director I will definitely look into more from now on.

On Topic: Persepolis is a great lesser known animated film. It is about a young girl coming of age in a radicalizing Iran and other parts of Europe. It is black and white but  completely beautiful. Funny and moving all at once. Watch this film!
