Forums - Microsoft - New Xbox 360 has red dot of death, instead? Not quite

So basically.....it knows it's going to have problems so it nips it in the bud before it has a chance to become anything bad. Sounds great on paper. But what if I have a legitimately broken 360, and it just keeps turning off to prevent overheating. It's essentially RRoD right? What do you do when that little loop possibly happens?

I'm not trying to knock the feature, it's sounds good. But I doubt that all the RRoD problems of years old could've been resolved by simply turning off your Xbox mid-play. Hell (anecdote here), my friend's 360 red ringed when he turned it on like 3 or 4 days after we played CoD4. Plenty of time to cool down right?

I think what may have happened is your friends old 360 went beyond the correct temp during play. When you switched it off, the solder cracked while cooling.

Hopefully this new design by M$ is designed to switch off the 360 before it gets to a severe temp. Maybe if it reaches 5 degrees over what M$ say is a good temp for the unit then it shuts down.

Likely this would appear during a hot day and long play.

I think that explains why RROD is so common here in Australia. It's a naturally hot country and in the summer... omg...

Friends who have had X360's experience the RRODs even with the Jasper models and it's all due to massive play during hot summer days here in Australia...

Did you read my first sentance? I'm sure they all have this feature and its great MS added it to the 360, but my argument is that ALL hardware intended for home entertainment should be designed to work in enclosed spaces due to the fact that people have entertainment centers. I think you got your panties in a bunch for nothing.

All your home entertainment equipment has warnings about adequate ventilation in their warranties/manuals. Just because most people are neglectful, doesn't mean the manufacturers are liable.

Tease.

I wonder if they can retro-fit this feature into the older 360's via FW update or w/e...might ease a few minds imo

Proud Sony Rear Admiral

The 360 looks better standing up vertical because it can show off it's curves. Looking at her, Microsoft really did a number on her waistline similar to a SlimFast commercial. The 360 used to be curvy with sensuous curves. Now she looks like her waist has spent too much time in a corset.

I also am not pleased by the side ventilation. It looks like a $300 Alienware wannabe with those hideous gills.

PS3 has a similar feature and it saved my PS3's ass when I accidentally left it on when I went on vacation. It was sitting upstairs in my home during the summer and it was ~110 degrees up there while the thing was running. I came back and saw a blinking red light, only to find out that it shut itself down due to overheating.

This feature should be applauded and should have been implemented a long time ago.

every console of this gen has had a feature like that form the start (without the screen message, but just straight power down - even my 2002 Athlon had that feature as well as I found out when my CPU fan died and the PC kept shutting down after 10-20minutes until I finally realized what was wrong - saved the CPU), but it seems either the temperature chosen for the shut off was too high or hot spots in the non-sensored areas caused the chips/solder to be damaged permanently

No... both PS3 and 360 had problems with their fans... people who fix them will tell you exactly what's wrong and I really am to tired to go over it right now, but it has something to to with the fans not kicking in high gear fast enough... or at all in some of the early models

I'm assuming it says "Nice job dumbass, you broke it!" for a error message if you ignore the warning. You can't say MS didn't warn you. Seems like though the person TRIED to Red Ring it and it instead just denied him.
