Imagine a simple 2D Mario platforming game similar to New Super Mario Bros. for DS. The action is displayed on the 3DS's lower screen and is played like any other 2D side scrolling Mario. Then comes the twist!

You come across a glowing pipe leading to the sky, you jump in, the other end of the pipe appears in full 3D on the 3DS's top screen and out jumps a 3D Mario complete with a 3D world similar to a level from Super Mario Galaxy. The action then continues on the top screen in full 3D.

Would something like that work? Could it be fun? I'm sure there are many more possibilities with the 3DS that completely change gameplay purely because the 3DS truly is like nothing we've ever seen before.

I hope we see some crazy new ideas with the 3DS, everything  I played at E3 was good but n ot mind blowing.

Intriguing, but it sounds a lot like Mario's Flip ability in Super Paper Mario.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 kind of already does this, albeit without as much balance.

Rol is absolutely right. Though I must say their are already some 2D parts in Galaxy and Galaxy2. I think it could work out very well I would love it. But some would like the 2D and not 3D and vice versa. It would be a gamble for Nintendo to do. But then again Nintendo loves to gamble and for the most part they come out on top.

I'm not Miyamoto but I'm sure he's already got some crazy idea for Mario. An idea that we'll end up freaking out about and get us back playing Mario for the next few years!

Wow, that flip thing in Super Paper Mario would be PERFECT for the 3DS. But I'm expecting (and hoping for) Super Mario Galaxy 3-DS

I wonder how 3d can innovate gaming or is it all just for show? We'll see.

I dont even try to guess what is next for mario , but i can rest sure Nintendo Tokyo studio , will come up with a Mario game that will make we say "WTF"
