I wonder how many people will buy Kinect and return it to gamestop very soon after when it doesn't work because they tried to use it while sitting.

I agree that Kinect with its unicity is in the same good initial conditions of Balance Board. Just another good reason to avoid to risk ruining its image trying to make it do what it's not good at. It isn't a universal, general purpose interface, it's a special purposes (plural, because despite not being general, there are already multiple uses where it could be the best interface and others can be devised) one, but, like BB, with a potential appeal very wide. So the best MS can do is to push games where it can be the best, like dance, soccer, wrestling, some fitness ones and whatever else they can find, cheating users into believing it can be better than wheel and pedals for racers, and whatever else it's not really the best at, can only disappoint and piss them off, so damaging Kinect. Edit: I realize that you said something similar to what I'm saying, maybe before I wasn't clear enough about referring only to MS pushing uses that Kinect isn't good at, or not ready yet. |
There is a significant quantity of development, its a software vs difficult hardware issue, but like the PS3's processor theres a lot of potential there if they can get the software running fast enough and theres a lot of room for improvement. Its very likely that Kinect in two years if it stays on the market will be considerably different to the Kinect of today in terms of processing power required, accuracy, and the experience of developers making use of the interface.

Sony did it with the PS3 and those trailers. Since they were forgiven, everyone expects the odd bullshot/bullcrap video to surface. It doesn't really matter what they do until they actually throw together an advertisement for mass consumption.
Tease.
| Squilliam said: Oh I assume they will get everything nice and sorted eventually. Its just that its incredibly complicated software, which is why both Sony and Nintendo stayed away from this kind of implementation and why Microsoft is the only one to dare to try. So long as its good enough at launch and is continually updated I see no problems with the interface. Its a software issue and software can be patched.

quite true - but having to patch something out of the box and keep patching it thereafter...update overload?
on a PC ok no problem, I can understand...but a console? hopefully MS won't be as bad as Sony with their (until recently) 1 000 000 patches per year
sure the interface software (and hardware) is complicated, but is Joe Console Public ready to deal with it when it might not work 100% as soon as it's plugged in?
it's going to be interesting to find ot if MS can nail it properly before initial distribution

Proud Sony Rear Admiral
Sheesh! Next thing you know, people'd ask for laying down mode, too.

I never said it was ok for Sony to do that and i didn't think it was. Sony had a WORKING feature that they felt they had to remove because of piracy problems, that if had not have been there it would still be here. However it should be absolute nobody should be able to do it. Micros product hasn't delivered and the adverts are already for mass consumption, just because it wasn't all over the tv doesn't mean it was not a viral campaign. If they couldn't get it to work they never should have showed it. Furthermore, what has/will micro do to inform the people? So far they have hid everything.

Games risk being pirated too and are the reason for piracy to be created. They should remove games compatibility.

Yes, I realized reading another thread that using more efficiently the available computing power, and in future consoles having more power available, some Kinect capabilities can be expanded (the most evident improvement with future consoles' power could be the number of active players trackable at the same time). This is a good thing, but it doesn't deny that advertising a feature that actually can't be offered from the start, or uses that for its very nature it's not good at, can damage Kinect's reputation, MS must instead push strong whichever use Kinect will be the best at since its release, this way, if the games are good enough, it could achieve a success comparable with Balance Board, and what's best, due to its different features, in a new market of its own.
