Looks aside, I want to know what really matters to me: will the infamous 'light of death' be fixed on the slim versions? If yes, I might finally get a 360.

The RRoD is not an acutal issue with any 360, instead it is an indicator for people at the factory, to let them know that you've had a massive system failure. You can also get 2 red lights, which indicates a different malfunction, and which is not covered under the 3 year warranty.
In other words, the RRoD is an indicator of a massive system failure, and it is not the cause of the system failure. The system failure can be caused by any number of things, the most common being improper soldering on the mobo, which fails due to longterm exposure to excessive heat.
Now, I believe, what you want them to fix is the most common cause of RRoD, the heat issue. I'm not sure if that will be fixed with this reitteration, or if new problems will arise.
However, if all you care about is the removal of the actual red colored lights, well MS could easily do that, and the 360 could still have the same issues, and it could still fail regularly with or without those lights. What you want and need to be fixed is the heat issue, and the lights on the console should in theory, be insignificant.
Let me use an example here. Let's say your car that keeps breaking down, and when it breaks down, the check engine light comes on. Now, what do you want the people at the shop to fix? The cause of the breakdown? Or would you rather them just remove the fuse for your check engine light?
