Don't forget sims, playground, dogz and catz.
Resident evil 4- I already owned on GC but I just loved the controls (first game I owned on wii), you gotta also get Metroid prime 3-it's easy but worth the ride. I'd also recommend renting Resident evil Umbrella Chronicles. With two wiimotes its fun as a rental.
Guys, RE4 and Godfather aren't exactly games to play with the family.
Well you can't shelter them forever. I show my kids Zombies and say "That's what happens when you use drugs" and then I pop the zombies. Sure the kids cry and run to mommy, but my toddlers aren't smoking crack.
J/k I don't have kids.

Agreed, but the cute art style of this belies the nature of the game. It's far too difficult for kids or even most teenagers. This is an adult puzzle game for fans of old point and click adventures, and it's very difficult.
For your family and you to play together:
-Link's Crossbow Training + the Wii Zapper is a great buy, and should deliver lots of fun.
-Wario Ware Smooth Moves is a great family party game.
-Mario Party 8 is good, but Mario Party 9 will be out in a few months so that's probably not the best choice.
-Rayman Raving Rabbids is a lot of fun.
-Excite Truck is a wild and fun racing game, but Mario Kart should be out in a few months so you may just want to wait.
-SSX Blur is a great snowboarding game.
-Mario Strikers Charged (although this game is very difficult. may be frustrating for kids)
Some family friendly single player games are:
-Super Paper Mario
-The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (though this is rated Teen for a reason, so play with discression)
-Zack & Wiki: The Quest for Barbaros' Treasure
-Elebits
-Mercury Meltdown Revolution (really fun budget puzzle game. Especially if you like Super Monkey Ball).
Some not-so-family friendly single player games are:
-Resident Evil 4 Wii
-Metroid Prime 3
-Trauma Center: Second Opinion (might be family friendly depending on ages of your kids. Your wife will probably like it.
-The Godfather: Blackhand Edition
Some not-so-family friendly multiplayer games are:
-Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles (Great co-op!)
-Trauma Center: New Blood (Sequel to Second Opinion. Same applies, but this one has co-op surgery.)
-Medal of Honor Heroes 2 (pretty good online play)
I hope that helps you out. Enjoy your new console.

I rather enjoyed Wii play, it gets a little tedious if you're doing it alone, but at least half of the games are actually a lot of fun when you have that second person. Tanks, Laser , and billiards are great, Shooting range and the cow racing are fun as well, the fishing game and the pose me game are okay, though a little tedious, even with 2 players. the only ones I really have an issue with are Find me and Table tennis.
i think the nicest thing about it is you actually have a Co-op mode with the one tank game. So you don't just compete, but you can work together too.
Twilight Princess is a must have for single player. It's a bit linear, but the controls are just SOOOO nice. I really can't wait for a non gamecube port that can offer better challenges for the improved control scheme.
It's also fun to just watch too, cause the storyline is really excellent. Your daughter might be able to get into it as well, especially if you help coach her through it. that's the game my sister got into the most.
I don't own a lot of games myself, simply because i don't have the funds. My recommendation is start renting. Use gamefly or just find a rental store and go crazy and judge them yourself. Most of the Wii games that i have seen fall into 1 of 4 categories, all of which are pretty much determinable within a standard rental period.
1. Crap, and shouldn't be bought or rented again
2. Simple, yet entertaining, fun to play with multiple people. could be worth buying
3. Really awesome and amazing, but wow it's short. i beat it before I even had to return it.
4. Really awesome and amazing, and dangit, I've just gotta have this one.
Hope that helps some.

Oh come on, the family that beats hookers with lead pipes together, is the family that stays together. =P
True, but you don't always have to play with the kids... Daddy can always have his own secret collection
I recommend Rayman Raving Rabbids 2, Kororinpa and Cooking Mama :)
