Sony LCD 3DTV Gets Disappointing First Look

Gary Merson at HD Guru has seen Sony's new KDL-55HX800 LCD 3DTV live and in person. His first take? Even a slight tilt of the head makes you see double and lose the 3D effect. Uh oh.

Merson found a whole range of things to be troubled about in his time with the Sony: double-vision, color shift, relatively shallow depth. But the main issue—as Mark reported at this year's CES—is that LCD and OLED screens just aren't up to 3D. At least not in the way that plasma displays clearly are.

It's also worth mentioning that the HX800 Merson viewed is actually the lowest end 3D model Sony offers, and in fact is technically a "3D-ready" set, meaning that it uses a separate sync transmitter instead of the integrated 3D functionality of the LX900 series. We won't know how big, if any, a difference that makes until we're able to compare the two side by side. But for now, the early returns suggest that plasma's still the early king of 3D technology. Regardless of it being on the low end of the models Sony offers... spending this much on this model is not a good idea, and do not get the 3D-Ready, get the intergrated.

"The line features screen sizes including 40, 46, 52, 55, and 60-inches and ranges in price from around $2,100 (KDL-40HX800) to about $5,000 (XBR-60LX900)."

Disappoiting, it is definitely a case of waiting for the prices to come down here. Sony's push for 3D has come to early I think, the market isn't there for it yet

3D will make sense for the Xbox 3 and PS4. I think you have to design hardware especially for it and write some software for it. A firmware update is not enough. I am looking forward to the stuff MS has to offer about this straight to your eye thing, but I am more excited about the 3DS.

3D will only be mass market when there are no glasses involved IMO.

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

dno how there will EVER be 3D without glasses?? unless u say like 3DS but thats not real 3D i think real 3D is some sort of holographic screen (thats if u dont wear glasses)...

It's called Autostereoscopic Technology. Look it up. It will show up in a big way in the next 10 years or so.

realy slow news day. oh wait. E3 is next week thats why. 3D?

Did anyone think LCD was going to be top dog when it comes to 3D? LED's even? I've had a 3D LCD for a year now (22 inch viewsonic 120 hz monitor) and these new TV's have the same limitations as my monitor. The greater the depth the more ghosting you see...

If you want the best 3D display this year Panasonic plasma is your answer...

Sure, you may have to throw away the glasses that come with the TV as they are god awful(they allow way too much light, and purchase Xpand 103 set for 150 a pop...but it is still worth it.

If you want to save money and cant affor the panasonic plasma...Samsung plasma > any LCD when it comes to 3D.
