I actually think he's right as well. The question is, how did so many people recently convince themselves that JRPGs were so much more popular in the west last gen?

I agree pretty much. Say Lost Oddessy and Last Remnant were multiplat, LO would be over 1 Million combined and Last Remnant would be above whatever its at now. Japanese companies said they thought going 360 only would help them penetrate the western market in terms of JRPG's.... |
funny as it sounds Last Remnant is actually multiplat it is one of the very few JRPGs to be released on PC.

Probably because they are rpg fans who liked the last gen line of rpg`s more and thought that more people did aswell :P
But its really only a few games >_> There are only a few bigshot j-rpg which alot of people like xD

lol...
These dont do a good job at disproving the thread titile for 2 reasons. you said the 1st one, Name Brand..if i has pokemon, FF or Mario its gonna sell. Second reason these " Hidden" JRPGs as in if you asked the average of uneducated gamer( of hell even some educated ones) What genre are they playing there not gonna telll you a JRPG... Most players of Pokemon or the Mario games dont even know there layin a JRPG.
EDIT: btw you lost me SO4 is currently at 940,000k acording yo VGChartz..so unless you meant 60k im lossed

JRPG I still believe are popular in the west, and in Japan, the problem is that not that many quality JRPGs have been released this generation on the right consoles (I like my 360 JRPG, but lets be honest with ourselves....they could have done better on the ps3 market). Also why is it, that Pokemon is always ignored when talking about JRPG. It would be like ignoring Call Of Duty franchise when talking about FPS. |
the moment jrpg starting hitting the ps3, they started selling more, obvious demographic starvation.
it been a while i seen my circle of friends talking something other than FIFA, COD, when FF13 released

I talking just western sales. SO4's sold under 600k in the west.
There has always been a certain type of gamer who liked (J)RPGs.
However, those gamers are getting older and while not necessarily wiser, certainly more busy. That meant less time for gaming.
The following generation of gamers tend to like games that have more action, so the slow pace of JRPGs was not to their likely.
In other words, those who grew up on JRPGs now real lives and those who play video games prefer FPS and Action-RPGs.
It's all about changing taste and demographics.

I am Mario.I like to jump around, and would lead a fairly serene and aimless existence if it weren't for my friends always getting into trouble. I love to help out, even when it puts me at risk. I seem to make friends with people who just can't stay out of trouble. Wii Friend Code: 1624 6601 1126 1492 NNID: Mike_INTV |

Oh yeah... Pokemon and KH. Pokemon is just bloody brilliant though... it combines simplicity, with a potato chip like mentallity and a great theme/idea. While KH has the boosting of TWO huge franchises. |
and probably being an action adventure game too.

Yeah i guess this is partly true, i think its also that many JRPGs at the moment are according to reviews not very good and a lot of them dont seem to have changed. they still contain a lot of level grinding, and this can put people off like me who are busy nowadays.
the same thing can be said about MIkami's games, Resident Evil has declined from its PS1 days, and the other games hes involved with havent done that well. i think its just Japanese games have never been easy to market here, (Bayonetta, Devil May Cry) so JRPGs have had it a lot harder.
by the way can anyone reccommend any decent RPGs, Resonance of Fate??, Star Ocean 4??
