There has always been a certain type of gamer who liked (J)RPGs.
However, those gamers are getting older and while not necessarily wiser, certainly more busy. That meant less time for gaming.
The following generation of gamers tend to like games that have more action, so the slow pace of JRPGs was not to their likely.
In other words, those who grew up on JRPGs now real lives and those who play video games prefer FPS and Action-RPGs.
It's all about changing taste and demographics.
