i think hes right. the games which have been defining this GEN have all come from developers west of japan.

Quite the opposite, all defining games this gen came from Japan, namely from Nintendo. Though it should be pointed out that Nintendo isn't a good representation of average japanese developer, while Namco-Bandai is (4/5 of their sales are from Japan).

Don't you know Nintendo is another problem.  - Namco!

In all seriousness, I really don't know why Nintendo or Sony are excluded from this. For some reason I think namco is just trying to look for every possibly excuse to explain sales.

Also I would have never thought creativity and epic were going to be in the same sentence.

Although Sony is a Japanese company, most of their more advanced games this gen have come from Western devs.

OT: It does seem like he's not including first party's in this. Perhaps because if you designing the hardware it's easier to make more advanced software?

Well I was talking about Sony products that are from Japan, namely Gran Tusimo 5....lets not forget Team Ico.

They're just trying to push Ninja Theory and Enslaved. If they weren't trying to make Enslaved the next big thing, they wouldn't put Ninja Theory of all devs on that list.

I am disappointed Naughty Dog didn't make that list :(

  Kinect! who needs video games!

In terms of the HD consoles I'd have to agree Japan has fallen behind. But if you judge the industry as a whole, Nintendo have been at the forefront of creativity this generation. Super Mario Galaxy 2 is further proof of that. It has to be said Nintendo aren't a typical Japanese developer though, they're virtually a games industry of their own.

I did think about them, but they haven't really released anything this gen (except GT5: Prologue). I'm sure when they do they'll be fantastic.

Bandai-Namco just wants to run their reputation into the ground, don't they?

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

This is true, all groundbreaking engine development for the past year has been from the West, mostly because a lot of western devs hail from PC roots, where it is still the #1 platform for engine prototyping and development.

ugggg..... this has been known as fact since the late 80's. Japanese are supreme at polish and squeezing out the most of a given Genre. America reigns at creating new game enhancements with Europe focusing on Story centric games. This is the Triumvirate of gaming for the last 20 years.

There will be times where each group waxes and wanes in these areas. There will also be the exception companies that are more consistent.

The Japanese developers by Namco statements are waning this gen. If it's true be sure it won't stay that way. It's just the natural flow of well everything. Confidence brings sloppiness. Failure brings a return to trying. Trying brings accomplishment. Accomplishment brings Confidence.

Squilliam: On Vgcharts its a commonly accepted practice to twist the bounds of plausibility in order to support your argument or agenda so I think its pretty cool that this gives me the precedent to say whatever I damn well please.

I don't listen to a company that makes 10 sequels of their 'Tales' series in less than 5 years and then whines that the rest of the Japanese gaming industry isn't being 'original'.

Six upcoming games you should look into:
