Namco Bandai VP says Japan no longer sets video game benchmark
The West has surpassed Japan in terms of its creative and technological output in the video games industry according to Namco Bandai vice president Olivier Comte.
"It's complicated for me to talk but what I can say is - and this is me speaking as a consumer - five to ten years ago Japanese developers were at the top worldwide," Comte told CVG When asked whether the Japanese games industry is dieing.
"Coming from Japan was a benchmark - it was synonymous with 'video games'. In the last five years this hasn't been the case."
"All the creativity, all the technology is coming from Western developers; Epic, BioWare, Crytek, Ninja Theory, whatever," Comte continued.
"I think today they are a little bit in advance compared to Japanese developers."
Namco Bandai are trying to buck the trend, however:
"What Namco Bandai is doing is pushing out and signing some very good products outside of Japan and I hope we will continue to do this," said Comte. "As for other companies, I don't know."
There does appear to be some concern for the Japanese games industry, even in Japan itself. Lost Planet 2 producer Jun Takeuchi said last month that the Japanese gaming industry doesn't have "a hope in hell" of catching up to the west if it doesn't evolve.
