Yeah "lol" is way overused. 95% of the time people don't actually laugh out loud when they say it so it has become meaningless. I admit to falling into that habit myself.

I used to for a month, it was a phase. I do say rofl out loud though, to my dog & my best friends. Not to any random stranger, thats social suicide.

I only use it when something I said is meant to be light-hearted or non-serious.

On the internet, you can't see or hear a person speak, so it is nearly impossible to detect their tone.
