Forums - Sales - Will X360 and / or PS3 overtake NES in total sales?

if there is still support for both PS3 and Xbox 360 for at least another 3 years.

Doesn't seem like you needed to post, then. Or even open the forum.

360 is declining fast, I'd say it's pretty  much done in getting significant sales from here on out. It will top off at 50-55 million, then MS will be forced to release a new console.

PS3 has a slight chance to reach that mark, depending on a few factors; when Sony decides to release PS4, how much more an effect a pricecut will have, and the strength of the PS3's lineup from here on out. I personally see the PS3 getting to 60 million without much trouble, but moving at a very slow crawl to anything past that.

If we are talking about a new console in two years time ... then I doubt it.

In four years, the PS3 has averaged 9M per year. On that average, it would add 18M, bringing its total to 53M.

In five years, the Xbox 360 has averaged 8M per year. On that average, it would add 16M, bringing its total to 56M.

Both of these totals are below 60M.

If new consoles do not come out until Holiday 2013 -- which is possible given the add-ons being introduced this year, it is possible that they might make 62M. (53 9=62 while 56 8=64).

This assumes constant sales, which we know is not true. But I thought that any declines that might come about because of age of console/maturity of product would be off-set by the new controllers.

(And as we get closer to the introduction to a new console, sales will probably slow considerably).

PS3 will cross that line, i don't know about the 360...seems likely.

And no, the Wii will NOT pass the PS1 in lifetime sales, probably, the Wii will have its sucessor next year, since they're losing marketshare.

You really think Wii won't reach 100 million sales to pass the PS1, when it's only 30 million away, yet the PS3 (which sells far less) will have no problems getting its extra 30 million to pass the NES?

Even IF, and that's a big if, Nintendo releases its next console prematurely, as in 2011, Wii will pull a Playstation and continue to sell decent numbers for a few years after. But in reality, I see a sensible time for the next Nintendo console to be holiday 2012, in which case the Wii should easilly have another 30 million sales by then.

I doubt Nintendo would release another console when A. Wii sales are still going strong, and B. they are already releasing 3DS during that time.

From my view, absoulte MINIMUM sales for Wii at this point are in the ballpark of 110 million, and that's WITH the consideration that Nintendo will release their next console next year (which is highly unlikely)

They should do. I don't think either Natal (or Wave, whatever it's called now) or Move will have any significant effect on hardware sales, and both consoles should keep selling at the rate of 10-12 million a year for three years or so. They'll both finish around 65 million, IMO. Very impressive for a second and third place console.

They both have a good chance of reaching 62m.

However, they will start to trend downward heavily in 2011 and 2012 as the new consoles are demonstrated at E32011.

Neither will reach 70m.

Yes I think the PS3 will end in 45 million this year and 48 million for 360 this year
Making it less than 20 million. They should do it by the end of next year. Unless somthing happens.

Not really impressive when you put in all the factors
