That works out to about $100 for just the controller. Considering it's basically the Wiimote Motion Plus, that's way too high to be the price.

Yep, if you are too hard up for cash to get the sub controller then you can sub it with the DS3 you already have. The sub controller has no motion controll function, it's basically an analog stick with some buttons.
