Forums - Sony - PS3 PS2 Backwards Compatibility?

I have a 120gb PS3. When I bought my PS3 I knew (or at least I thought) PS2 games could not be played on the system. I accepted that. I still have a number of PS2 games I still enjoy from time to time and Istill have my slim PS2 anyway.

Tonight, I was browsing around the PlayStation Store just to check out which game(s) I should buy or at least try out new demos. Well, I ran into this one that says "PS2 System Data" and it turns out it's an install that lets your PS3 able to play PS2 games!

How could I not have known this? It doesn't matter now I guess. I'm just excited that I'm finally able to play my PS2 games! My purchase of new games or demos will have to wait another time.

Am I the only one who did not know about this?

[***Note: If this has been posted, well, I'm sorry. I'm still having trouble navigating through this site and I do not know yet how to search for forums like how it was before...]

Er... as far as I recall, that PS2 System Data file only enables you to play your ps2 games online, assuming you have a BC ps3.  It does not enable BC on newer ps3s.

have you actually tried playing a PS2 game on it? if it works, then you may have accidentally found the holy grail of Playstation gaming!

Is this for real ?

That`s just a thing that was to be downloaded by people that bought the b/c ps3, dunno if it`s for the hardware solution or software solution but either way it won`t work with your ps3, sorry :P

What makingmusic said, its just for the PS2 online games.

It's to partition part of your hard disk for use by PS2 games, like Final Fantasy XI.

I had been playing FF8 since I installed it [***EDIT: Now downloaded***]

When I get home from work I'll try out some more games and let you guys know

Also, you guys do not have to believe me but you can definitely prove me wrong if I'm lying --- download it and play a PS2 game
