Forums - Sony - Uncharted 2 to much climbing?

Well it's a bit difficult to explain....with that they are automatic i mean that you don't have to calculate the distance, if ever, only in some places, you have to use the right timing (when you have, for example  jump from a spinning cylinder to another, in the mountain temple or from car to another) that goes to your favour, but when you press the jump button at right time you are sure that drake will arrive on the other end....that's not the case if you play crash bandicoot, jak&daxter, DKcountry, Sonic etc. in those games you have to arrive at right speed, in the right direction before jumping, you have to jump just before you fall in the gap, you have to control the jump while you're on air....all those elemets are automated in uncharted in 90% of cases, since the character stops automatically on the border of a platform (to climb of), you jump at the same distance indipently from the run-up, you can't control the jump while you're on air. That's why, in my opinion its not a platformer it is somethig different, also in zelda, for example, you can make jumps and fall of edges, not for that reason I call it a platform.

But you do have to jump in the right direction... and you do actually need to be moving in order to make jumps. That's why moving is essential to getting around in MP! You have to jump from one platform to another... it's platforming. Granted, it's different jumping and it's much less a science with the double jumps and hold 'A' to glide, etc. But it's jumping from place to place I.E. platforming and the description you gave it makes it seem like a QTE, which is incorrect.

One of the two main differences (the other being the floatyness) IMO between Uncharted and sonic for example, is that Uncharted has a very sophisticated grab mechanic which most other platformers lack entirely. I don't think this detracts from it's status as a platformer, I think it's more correct to say it's of a different variety. Sort of (but to a lesser extent) how Mario Kart and GT both have different mechanics yet both are racers.

In regards to no floatyness, that's true. But than again it wouldn't work in Uncharted because it's trying to mimic real physics which don't allow for that. You're fully entitled to your opinion, but I don't understand why .1 second of air-time, most of which doesn't amount to squat in the likes of DKC and Crash, is really all that important for genre classification. As I said previously, Drake jumps from place to place and climbs all over the place... this is what most people consider platforming.

I don't agree with everything (I wont agrue anymore, since I think I got this too far also, my limited knowlege of english doesn't permit me to explain properly about some things) but yes, I think I can more agree with this in general, I like the paragon with Kart and GT...it may be considered platforming of a different kind. (just not my kind).

IMHO, Uncharted 2 is NOT a platformer. A platformer is a game where platforming is the main gameplay and challenge. It's a challenge to time that jump, to be able to plan ahead your platforming, etc.

In Uncharted 2, it's too automatic.

However, is that a bad thing? No. The jumping and climbing in Uncharted 2 add SO MUCH to its core gameplay of cover based shooting. Run into a guy and you both get in a standoff behind cover? What if you start climbing the wall you're leaning against, jump behind him or shoot above him?

I mean it doesn't have to be that situational. It's just a blast being able to run around so smoothly (the game has very good controls) and be able to go anywhere and shoot.

That's why I said in my last post, inFamous 2 better be the perfect fucking game with multiplayer (and hopefully a singleplayer that at least takes the GTAIV approach and gives a little more story and sense of variety/purpose for each mission, instead of going all Assassin's Creed 1).

lol at people complaining about the train climbing sequence, yes it's slow because drake is injured, now go figure.

i loved the platforming, it really helps to break this game up, and I would get tired of it otherwise, uncharted is my favourite game this gen:):)

Slow doesn't bother me...doing it twice does.

i had no problem with the climbing.. i rather enjoyed it acctually

I just wish the climbing took some skill or timing, it requires none of either.

This.

its a third person shooter as far as i'm concerned,on the whole

off topic but didn't we have this talk in the game of the year awards it crosses over categories, action adventure seems to include so many types,

i understand both sides of the discussion as i think timing must come into platforming, drake is running, jumping, climbing, drop down i don't recall alot of timing, but the tall temple level and the temple in the snow are definitely platforming, its a nice slick blend of shooting and platforming, its just not punishing platforming, but thats not a bad thing

tomb raider on the other hand requires alot more timing in its platforming and can drive you insane

of course i'm only talking about platforming in these type of games, the 2d/3d platformers of old and new are the real platformers

                                                                                                                                        Above & Beyond

The only thing I dislike on Uncharted 2 are the jumps (while climbing)... Drake would totally win the long jump gold medal if he participated in the Olympics.

Sometimes it gets too unrealistic.

Nope, it's fine.  This sounds like the usual "I wish this wasn't the game, film, book..." it actually is argument, which to be honest I find tedious.  It's what it is, not something else.  You don't have to like it, but why wish it was the same but with less of this or more of this?  You're asking for a different game.

Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

I thought there was a good mix of shooting and platforming.

yeah that too

they like to compare the game to tomb raider

but if only the climbin and puzzle would've been on part with it

maybe on uncharted 3 , cuz I would like the game to be less linear

Nintendo made me a gamer so I'd be stupid to ever try to forget that                                             like so many people nowadays
