Forums - Gaming - Western developers are ruling Japanese developers this gen!

The Wii and DS were really dominating in Japan until now. Recently the PS3 has gained quite a bit of steam for Japan, Japanese developers/publishers will need some time to adjust to this, but I think we will see more and better efforts in the future (the 360 can also indirectly benefit from this as it's a non-factor for Japan).

You're overselling it a bit.  Yes PS3's recovered some (it's no longer looking like GameCube sales wise, which is exactly where it was pre-Slim), and it's generally tied with Wii now weekly, but there's not going to be an overwhelming developer shift in any direction.  It's basically too late in the gen for that, what you'll see is developers continue along the current course until they can refigure for next gen (starting with 3DS this fall, which will likely suck up the most support).

I don't agree, Europe and North America are both bigger than Japan. Japan is however again over-represented this generation, Nintendo games including the most popular franchise in history Mario. The top 10 of worldwide sales this gen is dominated by Nintendo!

Add to that game series like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Gran Turismo and Japan representation this gen is over the top.

Although I agree the technically most impressive games so far this gen have come from western teams, with games like Killzone, Uncharted and God of War. Also for distinguishing efforts with games like Heavy Rain, LittleBigPlanet and Warhawk western developers are performing well.

So Gran Turismo, MGS, Final Fantasy and Mario are new IPs? Read the OP before you answer.

Thank you

Imagine not having GamePass on your console...

Oops...I didn't pay attention to the bit about FFXIII. I'll revise my post.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

You can...but does that pass as fun gameplay these days?

What happens when you are busy killing and she decides to break a few crates open and take the first aid spray in there? :)

I've played a few hours of RE5 but I didn't know for sure that she actually opens the crates and takes stuff. I suspected she does though. Does she really?

lol. yes she does. You have to keep her on a a short leash...

So you're just comparing new IP's from Japan to the new IP's from the west?

How was this any different last gen? Are you only speaking for consoles? Because if not, I think the west dominated in terms of new IP's even more last gen.

If we're talking exclusively consoles, it's only reflecting how the PC developers have jumped onto consoles. I don't see why that would be anything to brag about. (Oh, as well as Japan jumping onto handhelds)

I don't see Western developers making Japanese flavored games so putting them to fight becomes pretty much pointless to me. I love both Western and Jap games.

It's amazing. Western devs were bashed harshly last gen for their RPG's and some action titles. Now look at them. It's not pointless...it's just looking at offerings from the west and Japan. This is regardless of genre.

This varies based on platform. On my 360 all but one game is western but on my Wii its all but 3 games are Japanese. I think this generation more evened it out. Now when you say Western you mean pretty much everything but Japan. But lets be fare isn't it more American? Europe seems to be catching up as well but Canadian and US publishers seem to be increasing their presence every generation.

There are plenty of Japanese games on the 360.

61 Japanese games, 40 Western games this generation.

So anecdotally, it appears not. On the other hand, this ratio was probably more lopsided previous generations, so...meh?

Is that your gaming collection, or million sellers, or what?

I just can't figure out where those figures figure.

That's just my collection.

I hadn't realized how many games I've bought this gen...it's scary!
