Forums - Sales - Mass Effect 2 Sales - What Went Wrong? (I am very worried)

Because most pepole who buy WRPGs in the west don't do so because of the story and different experiences that they can have, but because statistics are cool, and ME2 lost a lot of the min/max that was in the first.

no WRPG's like KOTOR sold because of their story.

WRPG's like oblivion for their vast array of innovative content like the Dark Brotherhood

So ME2 didn't sell well because it didn't have statstics? ROFL!

@OP

I don't know, like others said its the mystery of the generation in terms of sales.

Fallout, Elder Scrolls and Final Fantasy..hmmm... BIG IPs much ?

Pretty sure that ME is the highest selling new IP RPG series this gen.

Xbox 360 only sells shooters!!!
RPGs won't sell on 360, also the lack of multiplayer is the reason shooter fans didn't buy this!

I'm pretty sure that if you took KotOR and stripped everything SW related from it, it wouldn't have sold half of what it did.

Innovative content? I won't call it innovative, but you're right, pepole bought Oblivion because they had a lot of different sidequests and a lot of things to do, ways to upgrade the character etc, that's still different from the focus of ME2.

Bet with Dr.A.Peter.Nintendo that Super Mario Galaxy 2 won't sell 15 million copies up to six months after it's release, the winner will get Avatar control for a week and signature control for a month.

I made a similar post one month ago claiming that ME2 had disappointing sales, and many people here thought I was crazy. Its funny how fast the tide changes at vgchartz.

One of my points was that ME2 requires having to play ME1 to get the full experience. A lot of people who didn't want to play ME1 or didn't like ME1 won't want to play ME2.

RPG games, by nature, are very long and laborious. ME is a great idea for a series, but it does somewhat restrict casual gamers who don't have a ton of time to invest in playing the previous games. I barely had enough time to do a superficial playthrough of ME2 myself.

I think many game developers will think twice about making a game like ME in the future-- it is never good to segment your audience. This is too bad, because ME2 is one of the better games that I have played in the past few years.

Most anticipated games of 2011:

Uncharted 3,Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Rocksmith

Modern Warfare 3, Super Mario 3D

But why would you do that? Thats what KOTOR is, it even had a better story than Episode 2.

So what was ME2's focus then? I haven't played it so I don't know.

Ok, it took a while but I was wondering if someone was going to mention this.

- Though the 360 base is larger now than in 2007, there are many that have not played ME.  Some turned away because they didn't play ME, and the experience IS enhanced if you do.  Its not neccesary, but that had to have turned away a lot of people initially.

- ME released during a hot holiday period.  ME2 released AFTER one.  Sorry, great January games do not sell as good as great holiday release games (see RE4 for GC vs PS2).  So making the decision to release and focus on Dragon Age for holiday instead of ME2 was at the expense of ME2 sales.

- And, as has been mentioned, piracy.

That said, the game hasn't sold bad.  Far from it.  And we'll see what type of legs it has.  But its a trend we've seen this gen, where good ssequels to good games don't sell as much as the original (GeoW, Resistance, Bioshock, Assassin's Creed, etc).

its hype lol.... Mass Effect 2 marketing was HUGE and it started before 2010....
it gained momentum from the trailers and exploded just like uncharted 2 did when it was shown at E3.
