seeing as now you can easily get 720p dvd upscalers people are getting those instead of hd players. honestly dvd is pretty much life like. so what you can see a couple more pimples on the guys face in hd but is it really worth the 15 dollars more you pay over a dvd and the 300 dollar player? why not just get the 50 dollar upscaler that will make your dvd collection hd for your new hd tv.

15? where the heck are you looking? Walmart sells them for 5 - 8 bucks more then regular DVDs... same with Amazon.com, the two biggest retailers both online and B&M.

the numbers i posted are the most current. Ending the week of black friday they were 73 - 27 blu ray

If the $99 and $199 Toshiba HD-DVD players sold on black Friday were unable to even temporarily turn the tide, then I guess Sony finally has a winning format.

As someone pointed out already, HD is likely the new Laserdisc format. Its better than any previous format but the previous format is good enough for most people.

Seriously, try to drill your old folks on HDCP, HDMI 1.2 vs. 1.3, HD Ready, HD Ready 1080p, 1080/24p etc. Most film buffs care, the rest of the population could care less.

I hope I'm wrong about it since I'd love to see HD formats flourish but I think I'm right.

Let's just hope it doesn't end up like D-VHS. :)

am I the only one that think that neither HD dvd or BR has a future ????

HD will popup as the price of TV goes down the HD DVR goes down and the HD cable/sat offers goes down or standardise....

now about players...I don't think either we'll win... either both will disappear for a new format... or everybody we'll have an hybrid player and won't care....
I want my thousands year life expectancy holographic data cubes lol....

nah the future is movie on demand via high speed connection... and high capacity storage data support easy to press...

The war will be won on the price front. The fact that the numbers can vary so drastically week to week only highlights how low the adoption rate among consumers actually is. Thats why a major sale, or a video game console can alter the landscape.

High definition televisions are still too expensive for the most part. The players are still too expensive for the most part. The recent HD-DVD sale at WalMart for example did prove that if the prices are low enough however the demand will materialize. Right now however the gamble on the player front is still too high.

There is a window for widespread adoption for one of the formats, and that window is the upcoming year. Otherwise a new better format will have a chance to enter the race. Technically both formats are dated. New data storage has seen a upsurge in development.

Neither side is going to back down now. They are both too vested, and both feel they are in a strong position to win. Sony is trying to use a console to win adoption. While Toshiba is driving down the prices of their stand alone player. However that is a moot point. Neither would see a significant spike in adopter were the other to leave the market. The sales point of neither is wholly competitive at the moment. The PS3 just doesn't have the games to compel a million unit selling months. While Toshiba has yet to drive prices down low enough.

The war will be won in the wallet.
