Forums - Gaming - Ubisoft: 50% of new games to be 3D enabled in 2012

Ubisoft has said 3D gaming will quickly become a major factor in videogames, estimating that around 50% of all new games will be 3D-enabled by 2012.

"We will see more and more product coming in 3D on 360 and PS3 but also on portable machines," said the publisher during a recent investors call. "We can count on substantial grown in the 3D market just because it's more immersive, so it will be a good way for the industry to give even more emotion to the gamers," they added.

"I think next year we should see maybe 15-20% of games will be 3D on next-gen consoles ... and the following year will be at least 50% of the games."

Nintendo will reveal the Nintendo 3DS - a handheld with 3D capability without glasses - at E3, and PS3 was recently updated to support 3D TV sets which have begun hitting the market.

I hope they're right, but I don't see it happening, unless the 3DS really takes off.

Lets hope Just Dance Natal 3D is in the works.

This doesn't sound completely implausible, keeping in mind that he said 3d enabled, as opposed to only running in 3d. Obviously by 2012 the only games that that will require 3d will be on the 3ds (and PSP2 if that has glassesless 3d), but a lot of games will have 3d as an added feature by then

3D is cool and all but to much of it is just meh

It's about time Ubisoft got on board with this.

Games have been in 3D since Super Mario 64 and Pilotwings.

And with the new sustems launching,it will be full 3D next gen

The problem with 3D on current consoles is it's technically demanding. You literally have to make a choice between better graphics, or 3D. For example, everybody was excited about Killzone 3 3D. But are they so excited if you realize 3D will mean the game could have 30, 40% worse graphics than Killzone 2?

It's something like the equivalent of asking a game to run at 1080P or 60 frames per second, if not worse.

"games will be 3D on next-gen consoles"

while completely ignoring the Wii >_>

I lol'd

OT: I don't see why not, I mean I'm quite certain we'll see at least one or two next generation platforms released in 2012 that supports Full HD 3D out of the box and which will be a main selling point. Then you have 3D capabilities for the PS3 and XBOX 360 which will be pushed in the next two years and then you have every game released on 3DS and possibly PSP2 (we have no idea what Sony has planned) all releasing in 3D and by that stage, 3DS will be a well established platform for software.

"next-gen consoles" could refer to, you know, the consoles of the next generation..?
