Forums - Sales - attach ratio going up.

Sorry if this was posted, i didnt see it close the thread if so.

According to PlayStation University, the PlayStation 3 software attach rate is creeping in on the Xbox 360's, threatening to kill off the old adage that games simply do not sell on the Sony console.

Despite a lower install base, software sales for the PS3 were significantly higher than that of the Xbox 360 in the fiscal 2009, 115.6 million to 103.1 million. The fiscal year runs from May until the end of April.

The new results put lifetime software sales at 290.5 million, still well below the 360's 353.8 million, but catching up quickly.

At 35.7 million PS3 units sold, that puts the attach rate at 8.1. The 360 has 40.2 million lifetime sales, for an attach rate of 8.8.

Both those numbers are higher than the Nintendo Wii, with a 7.7 attach rate, despite much larger hardware and software sales. All three pale in comparison to the aging PS2, which has been out since 2000 and still has a remarkable 10.3 attach rate.

I am unconvinced that this is a long term thing, it could well be the influence of all the huge games that were released recently for the PS3

Indeed. Oh and by the way, I haven't heard "PS3 can't sell games" in about as long as I haven't heard "The ps3 doesn't have any games" Both of these died out with the MGS4 launch. The PS3 has a good attach ratio, the 360 has a slightly better one. There's not a huge amount in it.

Also, I'm not particular sure about this source. They don't detail how they arrive at their totals.

According to this source, the attach ratios are as follows

PS3 8.1

360 8.8

Wii 7.7

According to VGChartz, who explain their numbers in much more detail, the attach ratios are as follows

PS3 6.9

360 8.78

Wii 6.76

Giving us the total error in this source as

PS3 +1.2

360 +0.02

Wii +0.94

I know that they are using shipped numbers and VGChartz uses sold, but I can't see there being that big a difference between shipped and sold for PS3 and Wii but such a small one for 360, and I can't see there being widespread undertracking of PS3 and Wii games by such an amount

i have no clue, i am sure in time we will see whats going on. And i still hear people talking about ps3s exclusives, Sw, and just sales being lackluster. Here's one example http://www.vgchartz.com/forum/thread.php?id=109317&page=1 just a few mins ago. i dont really care 1 way or the other just stumbled on it saw it was recent and didnt see it posted so i thought i'd share.

a few things... about attach rate to help you guys out.

A) attach ratio pretty much always goes up. PS2 has such a huge attach ratio because... well duh... nobody buys PS2's anymore. A bunch of people are still buying PS2 games though. 360 being out a year longer is a BIG help because well... the 360 has way more "average months" of ownership. Which months of ownership/games bought has it's own flaws but is better then attach rate... though isn't really used anywhere.

B) Systems with lower sales often have higher attach rates. Really the PS3's floundering sales are confusing.

C) Attach rates also tends to go up when there is a large upswing in console sales. Usually someone buys 2-3 games with a system while the average person only buys 1 game every few months. Hence the PS3's attach rate is climbing faster because of the upswing in console ownership. This may or may not level off depending on how sales go.

D) Wii comes with Wii Sports. Which isn't counted. Really all things considered it's doing quite well.

E) There numbers appear to have no source.

If anything is really special happening there, it isn't

                                       That's Gordon Freeman in "Real-Life"

Piracy also have a large impact on "attach rate"

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

i think that what they did. was this. they divided the ltd software sales with the ltd hardware sales.

like this: 290,5/35,7= 8,1 and etc. jeje. but is that operation correct or not?. i dont know jajaja.

Actually, the point of that thread is that many PS3 users overhype games, not that the PS3 can't sell games
