I still think the DS can outsell PS2 if it stays on the market for the next 3 years or so, IT can hit 145M later this year and 155M next year sometime, I doubt Nintendo will take the DS off the market straight away once 3DS is out.

I think comparing sales of a handheld to ps2 is lame....ds will be the best selling handheld for ages to come..but console wise? PS2 is KING!

I agree, but Nintendo should avoid killing its sales too early, it's an achievement that would give it immense prestige and not to be overlooked. Aggressive DS pricing after 3DS is launched should be enough to support sales, anyway.

The DS will easily outsell the Ps2. By VGChartz numbers, it's just 7.2 million behind. By my estimates, that leaves the DS to tie the Ps2 somewhere around December this year.  There's no chance that the Ps2 will then suddenly start outselling the DS.

Why? Nobody minded comparing the PS2 to the Gameboy or the GBA. Are handhelds suddenly out of bounds because the DS is actually more popular than any console ever?

Yes, but there's that thing about Sony launching PS2 on emerging markets where average people can't afford more expensive consoles yet.

It's because unlike Microsoft and to a lesser extent Nintendo, Sony actively supports developing regions like South America, Asia, and Eastern Europe.  This same strategy is also beginning to help the ps3.  Sony recently launched the ps3 in the Philippines, which is the first "official" launch of any console in the region.

I honestly think sales in countries like the Philippines are what account for some of that 2 million gap between our figures and Sony's shipped figures.

Btw I wouldn't say it's more popular than any console 'ever'...sell a lot? yes...but there are SO many conditions to consider, and that is a whole different thread so let's not go there in this one cuz it might derail the whole thing

I think handheld wise DS is the king of sales no doubt there....and it will stay the same for a LONG time to come

BUT consoles are consoles, different games differet pricing different audience etc etc.....so they are a different field altogether 'IMO"

There just different, a hand held console is not the same as a console, hens why there seperate on the graph on the homepage
