Forums - Gaming - Looking for gaming/music headphone suggestions

I'm looking for headphones to be used primarily for gaming and music.

Here are my requirements

  • Not too huge. Should be somewhat portable. I greatly prefer on the ear headphones to over the ear headphones (like sennheisers)
  • Should be okay to use at higher volumes near other people without them hearing (like on a bus, plane, etc)
  • Very good sound quality. Currently using Sony MDR-V300, looking for a considerable step up.
  • If it has a built in mic, it should be detachable. Headphones with no mic are fine.
  • Price isn't too important, looking to spend $100-$200.
  • PS3 compatibility for voice chat is a plus, but not required.

Thanks

I got these:
Ultimate Ears 700 Noise Isolating Earphones
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ultimate-Ears-Noise-Isolating-Earphones/dp/B001TDKHVY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1273699217&sr=8-1-spell
The quality of sound is superb. They actually much cheaper now. Used to be £170.00

Astro A30's? Couldn't ask for more =P

I've looked at the a30's and I am considering those for sure. My issue is there aren't that many reviews out from reputable sites out yet. The reviews that are out are just about universally positive though.

Well of course they are universally positive, its Astro, they are considered one of the best in the business for a reason. =P
And might I add, the A30's are sexy as hell haha

I've done some more research and I honestly doubt that bolded part.

For one thing, Astro's Mixamp seems to be well regarded. It allows the user to change the balance between voice chat and game sound. It amplifies headphones and is supposed to be a good investment if you play a lot of games and already have a great set of headphones.

That said, the A30 and A40 seem to be a mixed bag. There are high quality headphones available for about $100 (SR80i / AD700) that absolutely kill the A30/A40 in music and gaming/movies respectively. Heck, I could buy both sets of headphones and still come out under the Astro's $230 price tag. The only area I can see the a30's winning out is looks, portability, and privacy against some of the lower priced, higher sound quality rivals. I'm questioning if I really want to carry around ~$150 headphones with me on trips anyway, as the a30s apparantly cook your ears when you're using them outside.

I have a zalman clip-on mic that I use now with my Sony headphones which works great, so really I'm free to get any set of headphones I wish. Astro's headphones seem to be more hype than substance frankly.

Where did you read that about them? I haven't done heavy research on Astro's but from what I've heard and read its been nothing but extremely positive.

ameratsu, I've been doing some research on a pair of headphones myself and just made my decision.

Klipsch Image S4 Earphones

From what I've read they are some of the best sounding headphones on the market, sound quality equal to literally headphones that range from $200-$500 and you can't go wrong with the price at $80.
