Forums - Sony - Please help me overcome my hatred (fear?) of FPS shooters

People say that the 360 is a shooter machine, but these days it is also the racing, rpg and RTS powerhouse of next-gen. But the PS3 is currently none of those things, as MGS4 is a stealth game and K2 could be as horrible as the first one. Trade in your PS3 and purchase a 360 if you have a genuine interest in shooters (Bioshock, Halo3 and COD4 are the best shooters out this generation EASILY). If you wish to keep your PS3, then don't bother learning to love FPS's unless multiplatform games like COD4 are good enough for you in the future. No insane third-party shooter will ever be exclusive to the PS3.

^takkxyz - nope no motion sicknes. how do people get motion sickness? is it just the quick movements on the screen that effect you, because your not actually moving so.... or is it your brain that thinks your moving because the game is moving thus the motion sickness?

Just curious

Hi

First, I'm new to VGC so welcome to me. Second, please promise not to smack or kill me when you read this:

I have never played an FPS shooter.

I have never had the desire to touch, hear or smell an FPS, let alone play one.

During all the hoopla over Doom 3, Quake, Unreal Tournament, Halo, Far Cry, bla bla bla... I just quietly turned the page and found something of better interest to read about.

So now my dilemma... every frickin game being released and getting 9's and 10's are FPS games like Bioshock and Halo 3 and (I think) Killzone.

Should I just rent one and get it over with? I really hate the thought of having to constantly stare down the shaft of a gun/rifle and shoot whatever is in front of me. It's like Batman's suit that has no swivel to the neck... he has to turn his entire body and shoulders to look left or right. I don't want that feeling. I like seeing myself in 3rd person to see my surroundings.

I think 90% of racing gamers hate the "in your face" close up perspective of the car for this exact same reason. They want to see their surroundings.

Is there an FPS that lets you switch views so I can pick the one I like best? RE4was really great when it came to using rifles, but I would never pick such a close up view to play through the entire game.

HELP! And I just bought my PS3 2 days ago. I won't have Uncharted or my racing game until Xmas. A game similar to Mass Effect would be perfect for me, but I don't think there is anything similar for PS3 yet.

Thanks!

I remember the first and second Doom games, I played those and played shooter games up until just before the n64 dropped. I developed a nervous disorder, which I still fight with sometimes though not nearly as bad as it used to be, and survival horror games/shooters etc would excite it and I'd take panic attacks. It was the uncertainty I guess, but I could take panic attacks for no real reason so giving it a reason could really suck. So long as you don't have that problem, you really don't need to ever play them if you don't want too. It's not like you have to fill some sort of quota. As a result of my panic attacks in my earlier years I stray away from such games, which is not to say I can't or don't play them mostly that they sum up bad memories rather forgotten. Long story short, try something like metroid prime or golden eye for the n64 work into it decide if you like it then try more of the "hard-core" things.

Buy the orange box, it has variety, which is missing in lots of FPS's. For the most part every FPS offers what every other one offers at this point. I thought the wall of FPS innovation was reached (in 2000-2001) but then I played portal. HL, Resistance, COD 4, Battlefield, UT and all the rest offer the exact thing IMO. The games vary in multiplayer, which is the selling point for me.

Personally I think FPS's are repetitive garbage for the most part. Other then Metroid and Half-Life thats all I really play. If you dont play any FPS's you arent missing out on anything, just rent one and you have played them all. They are all the same game with different skins.

edit: you have a PS3......only get orange box for the PC if you can cause the Orange box port to PS3 is garbage. If not rent Resistance, or COD4.

Getting an XBOX One for me is like being in a bad relationship but staying together because we have kids. XBone we have 20000+ achievement points, 2+ years of XBL Gold and 20000+ MS points. I think its best we stay together if only for the MS points.

Nintendo Treehouse is what happens when a publisher is confident and proud of its games and doesn't need to show CGI lies for five minutes.

Well it's not that.  It's that I am constantly CONSTANTLY reading about "must-have" games of the year, and all these great experiences, and most of them end up being FPS.  Also, since PS3 is currently all about how great things can look, and "compare this to Xbox360" and "witness the power of the cell processor!"  ...I don't want to miss out on something that truly is a great visual experience.  I do want to see what the cell processor can do, and most likely the first game to really prove that point will (probably) be an FPS shooter.

EDIT:  by the way, has any developer truly released a bug-fix patch on a console game yet?  They do it all the time on PC, but I am horrified and mortified that glitchy, buggy software is still almost a year old and no patches exist for a game released on a hard drive-featured console with broadband support.   You would think poorly-reviewed games that falter in the controls/camera department would get online patches to help the game along.

Ricardo. If you are looking for a good FPS game on the PS3, do yourself a favor and pick up Call of Duty 4. In my opinion it's MUCH better then Halo 3 as mine has been gathering dust since about a week after release.

I shouldn't have bought it in the first place since i never liked the 2nd one.

Right now I've been putting lots of time into COD4 and just having a blast online. And yes, I got it for the PS3 instead of my 360. Absolutely beautiful game and the single player is great as well. Personally, i think this game should have been rated higher then Halo 3.

You don't really need to be into FPS to enjoy the game. I will admit that I'm partial towards third person shooters (Like the Socom series) over any FPS games, but I'm actually enjoying one for the first time in a long time. And don't worry about buying old FPS's for older consoles or the PC's. You obviously want something for your PS3 and this is the game I'd recommend. (Especially since you have Uncharted coming for Xmas.)

Maybe you should meet the genre half way with Oblivion. An FPRPG might be exactly what you need.

Ah,  that's a slightly different issue. Here's the deal: the gaming industry is still in its adolescence, sort of. Most of the gaming presses, game journalism etc. are run by privileged white males who grew up on expensive desktop computer shooters. This slants the coverage towards the shooter demographic - people who love shooters, love the sports-style competition, etc. So they rave and rave about their favorite games. Don't believe me? Look at the roster of any gaming website and check out who writes the stories: guys, guys and more guys. PSM came out with their first issue, and who does the reviews? Five guys and one woman.

Don't believe the hype. FPS games are a tiny fraction of all games and shooter fans are a tiny fraction of the total gaming audience. So don't worry about missing out. I don't mean to bash FPS games, because they can be boatloads of fun. But they get waaaaay too much air-time and attention.

When i saw what the topic was, first thing that came into my mind was "i don't like to get kicked into balls, can someone help me".
I do understand your problem, i don't usually like first person games for the same reasons (besides that there are so many of them, which are too much alike, without anything new), the view is like looking thru a pipe, and running in tunnels doesn't help either. It's not "free" enough.
I was going to suggest Metroid Prime 3, but since this is in the Sony discussion, it's propably out of the question. It's not a shooter, but it's 1st person and you shoot in it. It feels a lot more natural and free, than other FP games. It does have interesting story etc.
Anyway, in Bloodrayne you can choose from 1st person and 3rd person views, but you can't change it in the middle of the game and it's not exactly a shooter either. If you don't like to play it in first person view, you can restart with 3rd person. So, if you have PS3 with BC, maybe you could find the PS2 version. And the game pretty much sucks, although it's story isn't bad, if i recall.
