Ah, that's a slightly different issue. Here's the deal: the gaming industry is still in its adolescence, sort of. Most of the gaming presses, game journalism etc. are run by privileged white males who grew up on expensive desktop computer shooters. This slants the coverage towards the shooter demographic - people who love shooters, love the sports-style competition, etc. So they rave and rave about their favorite games. Don't believe me? Look at the roster of any gaming website and check out who writes the stories: guys, guys and more guys. PSM came out with their first issue, and who does the reviews? Five guys and one woman.
Don't believe the hype. FPS games are a tiny fraction of all games and shooter fans are a tiny fraction of the total gaming audience. So don't worry about missing out. I don't mean to bash FPS games, because they can be boatloads of fun. But they get waaaaay too much air-time and attention.
