LittleBigPlanet was a great game overall but not that great of a platformer.
Super Mario Galaxy is a great platformer but the level of difficulty made it utterly boring sometimes.
I say neither.

Super Mario Galaxy is platformer bliss, Little Big Planet is a mediocre platformer with a decent level editor.
There's no question which is the better platformer.
Why would you use New Super Mario Brothers Wii. That way they'd both be 2D platformers.
While I greatly prefer 2D platformers... the jump physics were so awful I gotta go with SMG.

LittleBigPlanet is a game I never stop playing, while Super Mario Galaxy I felt to be the weakest 3D Mario. LBP is in my top five favorite games of all time, while SMG is far further down the list. I guess in that sense I'd go with LBP.
That being said, they're totally different styles of game. One is a 3D platform that focuses on some of the best single player level design around, while the other is a 2D platformer that emphasizes user generated content and messing around with your friends.
I've spent more time just screwing around in LBP, not even seriously playing the game, than I've spent playing all of SMG.

this. And since a Nintendo and Sony fan have agreed to this i believe that this is the most accurate answer.
LBP hands down, the replayability and creativity behind that game is on a whole different level

Super Mario Galaxy easily wins imo. It has better game mechanics, the gravity effects were just awesome. The music was amazing and the level design was great. I also loved the use of colour in that game. Very artistic.
The thing about LBP is that I couldn't get myself to complete it even with 4 people, it was lacking something to motivate me to get to the ending. I never attempted to make a level though, not that fond of level editors. Maybe that's why I don't think it's as great as others claim it to be.

lbp platforming it's physics based :p, all objects react to what you do, it's actually better.
....might as well ask people which console they own...apples and oranges.....that said, as a former Wii owner and current PS3 enthusiast, I'll say this:
Seeing as how SMG is the best traditional platformer ever made, and LBP is a mediocre platformer that gets by on its innovation, artstyle, and level editor, I would say SMG by a long country mile, and IMO, LBP doesn't touch any real Mario game ever released in quality of platforming, the difference there is a vast gulf.
LBP has its strengths, but solid platforming is not one of them. The jumping is far too floaty.
I don't need your console war.
It feeds the rich while it buries the poor.
You're power hungry, spinnin' stories, and bein' graphics whores.
I don't need your console war.
NO NO, NO NO NO.
